A young adult relative, now 18, was diagnosed Autistic (/Asperger's) as a 12yo. They have been in denial about it due to perceived/actual limitation of some of their career choices. Their parents also suspect possible ADHD, but not diagnosed.
For several years the young person has struggled with aspects of engaging and thriving in education or vocational courses. They are bright and capable and thrive on positive reinforcement, but often struggle to apply, and often even to attend.
They have not disclosed their diagnosis on any college or job applications and have been in a cycle of non-attendance, disengaging or losing otherwise brilliant opportunities. The parents wonder whether it might help them better engage with coping strategies or even additional support to thrive if the young person better understood their ND or even decided to acknowledge or disclose it with their educational institutions, going forward.
Are there any easy to read books, YouTube or other resources that the young person could perhaps tap into? Something that might gently start to give them some insights into how conditions like autism or ADHD might affect their ability to engage with and complete educational tasks, and give them a bit of food for thought in terms of how they might understand, articulate or reframe whether and what kind of support they might need or want.
Thanks
