Can all GCSEs be taken Post-16 with an EHCP?

If a child has an EHCP and isn't able to sit all GCSEs in Year 11, or doesn't pass them, will they have the option to take them / resit them at a later date any time before they are 25 (any subject, not just Maths and English)? I can't seem to find this information online. There are some subjects DD would like to do in future but is only able to manage the core subjects in Year 11.

Thanks in advance!

Additional subjects can be sat at a later date. If sitting as a private candidate for some subjects it is easier to sit IGCSEs rather than GCSEs, but that isn’t a problem.

Thanks, that's good to know. Hopefully it will be OK.

My Foster son went to a special school because he has learning disabilities but he does love learning. Unfortunately his school would only let him sit 3 GCSE last year in Maths he got a level 3 and in science he got a level 4 and in Food Technology he got a level 4. Obviously we were very worried he did not get the level 4 in Maths. We got him into a really good college. They provided a support assistant in every single lesson. This year he has studied BTEC level 2 Sport and passed and it's equivalent to 2 GCSE grades 5-6 and 2 grades equivalent to grades 4-5. He also passed GCSE Maths at level 4. He has also passed a Functional Skills 1 in English. He's been given more support and encouragement at his college than he ever got at his special school. He's also done a Cricket Assistant Coach certificate too. They also gave him a nursery of £1200 and 3x £70 Asda gift vouchers for over 95 percent attendance. He's now enrolled on the BTEC Sport Level 3 in Sports Performance as Nd Coaching which is equivalent to 2 x A levels and he will also do his Cricket Coaching Level 1 certificate. This year he will also do his GCSE English too. All is not lost for your DC OP, you just need to find a really good college that will guarantee your DC good quality support. Look out for BTEC's as they have some different subjects your DC might like and there is a lot of coursework so if DC is a hardworking plodder it suits their work style. No matter what your DC studies, they will have to study Maths and English if they did not get them to GCSE level yet, if still under 18. I have told Foster Son we are hugely impressed with his work ethic and it just shows what he can achieve when he is given the opportunity.

That's great news re your foster son, thanks for sharing. You must be really proud! It's good to know there are still options post-16 if your child can't do everything at the usual time. We don't have much choice college-wise here but I'll look into what is available in our area.

Even if the college options are limited further options are possible via EOTAS wherever you live.

@Fiona48 You may be better off starting your own thread. Up level with the Talk > SN teens bit there should be a 'start new thread' either to the right or from a / down chevron. I am in Hants. Not impressed by the LA either.

TeenDivided · 01/12/2023 16:01

@SpookySpoon22 Your difficulty might be not so much sitting the GCSEs as getting someone to teach them / funding for tutoring. What is theoretically possible and what is possible in practice seem to be 2 different things.

I've had zero support from the LA for my 19yo to study FS Maths & English post college. They didn't 'listen' when I said she couldn't do a full time course and Maths and English, so we are going it alone. She is 'too young' for adult education funding apparently.

@TeenDivided Hampshire aren’t a stranger to EOTAS and they are the biggest personal budget spenders. You need to request an early review and then appeal when you next have the right of appeal. LAs don’t do anything unless forced, but tuition (F2F or online) in some form is a standard part of many EOTAS packages across the country, including in Hampshire.

TeenDivided · 01/12/2023 16:20

@OvertakenByLego To be fair we haven't pushed on funding as that isn't really the sticking point for us. But they were as useless as a chocolate teapot over identifying how to proceed. Seemed very stuck on the 'should be in college on a full time course' and wouldn't move. And I did ask for Emergency Review of EHCP and mentioned EOTAS provision but they just ignored. So I just kind of worked around them. That said, the annual review is now due ...

OvertakenByLego · 01/12/2023 16:33

@TeenDivided LAs will try to get away with whatever they can. Strategic incompetence saves them money. Don’t rely on the LA giving you correct information, especially about EOTAS. Unfortunately, DC whose parents know the system and can advocate for them get better provision.

Once you have had the AR, the LA must inform you whether they are going to amend or not within 4 weeks. If they are, they must also send a draft and then finalise within a further 8 weeks. Once you the LA has informed you they aren't amending the EHCP or have the finalised plan, you will have the right of appeal, and should appeal. DD will be eligible to be assessed for legal aid in her own right.

Reading overtaken by Lego .
This is very similar to my daughter's experience
Is this within Hampshire county council?😊

OvertakenByLego · 02/12/2023 17:25

@Fiona48 the law is the same whatever LA you are in. All LAs sometimes act unlawfully and in every LA parents need to keep the LA on track and not accept everything the LA says as the truth.

You have posted multiple times under different names and have been advised you need to request an early review. Have you? Once an EHCP is detailed, specified and quantified, via appeal if necessary, it can be enforced.
