Sheltered housing for ASD young adult who’s not coping

Does anyone know anything about sheltered housing for young people with ASD? Ds is 23 but has always been 4-5 years behind socially and emotionally. We moved house last year and he didn’t want to come with us so moved into a house share with a boy he’d known from school and a couple of other students. When he first moved it seemed like he was doing well - he had a part time job which he was managing (it’s a job specifically for young people with ASD). But after a few months things started falling apart. He’s become very depressed but isn’t able to articulate that - he’s barely gone into work for months and is now on statutory sick pay which is about to run out. The friend he’d moved in with had moved back to his parents’ house and ds has no connection with the other people in the house. His sleep patterns are all over the place, he’s not eating properly and sounds awful when we talk on the phone. He has a history of depression - he dropped out of school halfway through sixth form and spent the best part of a year in his room. He’s had counselling and tried medication before but he says nothing helps.

He doesn’t want to move back in with us but he’s really not coping on his own - is there such a thing as sheltered housing for young people like ds? And would he have a snowball in hell’s chance of getting it?

Does DS have social care involvement? That would be the first step. It is likely you will need to push for supported living.

Does DS have an EHCP?

DS, or you as appointee, should look at applying for New Style ESA (if DS has enough contributions) and UC. And, PIP if not already in receipt of it.

Thanks - he had a statement which got transferred to an EHCP (which is how he got his placement) but it got discontinued when he started getting paid. He was on UC but again that was stopped but he’s about to run out of money completely so I’m trying to get him to reapply. Will UC talk to me if he agrees? It’s so frustrating that he’s treated as an adult when unfortunately he’s very much not in any way other than chronological age

You can become appointee for benefits. As well as UC (and New Style ESA if he has enough contributions) apply for PIP.

I think you should look at requesting an EHCNA. An EHCP can cover things like a supported apprenticeship, supported internship or supported work experience when DS is able to do that. It can also cover preparation for adulthood and therapies.
