Concerns of dyslexia

So we think our dd may be dyslexic. She is 7 and really struggling with reading and writing, she’s far behind her peers (still working at reception level) and I’m starting to get quite concerned. I try and do what I can with her but with a young toddler to look after as well it’s hard and she is very unwilling to put the effort it. She gets grumpy, says she hates reading, messes about. I don’t think we are getting the right support from school, her teacher said we should get more support when she’s in year 3 and I’m defo going to have my voice heard more but don’t know wether to start doing that more now? Im worried she’s going to struggle come year 3 and don’t even know where to start getting dyslexia diagnosed? We also have concerns she could have add but not as strongly as the dyslexia. I’m pretty certain on that one. Everyone tells me not to worry but how the hell are you supposed to do that!?

I have a DD with dyslexia (diagnosed at 7) and just waiting for the ADHD assessment.

Primary were brilliant in terms of spotting she was very dyslexic and getting all the assessments done. But then did nothing after that other than recommend Toe-by-Toe. (They had a very large percentage of SEN in her year group, mainly boys with emotional and behavioural difficulties so I think all the time got taken up dealing with them).

None of the dyslexia programmes worked for us - Toe-by-Toe, Nessy etc.

What has made a difference:

  • touch typing and moving to an ipad with keyboard (with Office 365 and Grammarly installed)
  • choosing a very large secondary school that is used to lots of kids with SEN
  • choosing a school where they ignore DD's spelling and focus on the content. No sea of red.

For touch typing, we used a dyslexia friendly programme called English Type Junior.

DD can't spell, still hates reading and finds it hard, but seems to be on track for decent GCSEs so just debating over whether she has a go at the SPAG marks in papers or we lose them and enable spell check.

You can contact a dyslexic assessor that is local to you. Through the PATOSS or BDA website. Good luck.

She is now going to get a screening done through school after I pushed for it. Although it’s not a diagnosis it will hopefully give us more of an indicator and we can take it from there.
