Why do private schools not like EHCPs?

Just that really. We have been actively discouraged numerous times by SENCO and head. Our pockets are not deep and our DD is struggling and off school. What to do? She is 12.

Some independent schools aren’t supportive of pupils with SEN, especially more complex needs, in general, not just EHCPs.

Also, the bar to get a wholly independent school named in an EHCP is higher than other types of schools.

Are you after an assessment @potsandpots79? Have you been to the GP?

In state schools, they have to prove that they are already providing an additional £6000 worth of school budget to meet a child's additional needs, if they have any hope of successfully applying for an EHCP.

If this is being done, an EHCP may provide a 'top-up' for anything over 20 hours of support.

In an independent/private school it would be rare for a school to be providing the level of support required free of charge to parents, or even, with a charge to parents to be able to prove to the LA that an EHCP is needed. Independent/private schools are businesses at the end of the day.

Schools don’t need to have spent £6k before requesting an EHCNA.
