DSD depressed and not getting out of bed

She has Downs Syndrome. The GP has prescribed antidepressants but she won’t take them. There are support groups but she is too low to leave the house right now. There is a disability community team in touch with her but it’s taking months to get an appointment. Before this she had a job and friends etc. Any advice?

How old is DSD? Why doesn’t she want to take the antidepressants? Has she been assessed by the mental health team? Is she receiving social care support?

26
She just says she doesn’t want to. The community team said she can have a meeting with the mental health team but it could still be a few months. No she doesn’t have social care support.

You should request social care assessments.

Did DSD have an EHCP? What was the plan for transition to adulthood?

Is the assessment organised through the community team? I will ask about the EHCP, I wasn’t with DP then.

Social care assessments are organised via social care.

I don’t mean this is a horrible way, but if you weren’t with DP when DD was young enough for an EHCP, which can last until 25 (or 26 in some cases), then are you the one best placed to support her? Would she open up more about her difficulties and reluctance to take antidepressants to someone who knows her better?

Not at all, I’m not her main carer her mum is. I’m just trying to find more info to feed back as her mum says she isn’t great online. Sorry I thought you meant when the ehcp started, I thought it would be from 16/18.

EHCPs can last until 25 or 26 in some circumstances. With an EHCP preparation for adulthood begins at 14 but continues all the way up to the EHCP being ceased. When it ceased there should have been a plan for adulthood.
