How far do your DC travel for specialists settings?

Looking into specialist schools. Local authority ones can not really meet DS14's needs, which are more SEMH that related to his dx (ADHD/ASC/PDA).

There a couple fairly close by that we have visited but also ones further afield (40-60 minutes travel that I don't know whether to consider or not. I'd be willing to move to reduce commuting times but what is realistic?

And yes, I know there is no guarantee of consultation/placement/transfer of EHCP to different authorities but just putting feelers out.

ds1 managed a 1 hour plus journey in secondary. Tough at first but he said he quite liked it by the end. One thing you have to factor in is likelihood of slower traffic at rush hour times and if transport is likely to be shared by one or more other children which can add to both the stress of the journey and the time it takes. ds1 had a shared taxi for a couple of years which added 30 mins to his journey time.

Up to 1hr15 is considered reasonable at that age, although many do travel further.

Ds is post 16 and his placement is approx 40 mins away.
A shared taxi can definitely add time on though. We recently had to get Ds moved to a different taxi, due to issues with a driver that was distressing him. And swapping has knocked off about half an hour a day.

Thanks for the responses. Doable it seems.

My DD travels about 30 mins down the motorway to a place specifically for SEMH, it was the only place nearby that was suitable. Before that, she attempted mainstream college which was slightly further away and transport was still provided as it was the only college offering the course she wanted to do.
