Yes I've come across quite a lot of kids left to manage themselves and keep their phones while visiting SEN schools and that really won't work for us. Also the attitude of letting them choose if they feel like engaging in lessons. I understand the theory but in practice it's not going to work in our situation.

Exactly and this was a huge issue for us.

AVOID THIS SCHOOL AT ALL COSTS!

Our son had a horrific time there and thank goodness we managed to find an alternative for him.

Whilst it has been some time since we extracted him from RGS, he is still traumatised by the experience.

Although the horrendous head and her deputy have moved on or possibly been moved on, the rotten culture at RGS goes much deeper than that.

Also, do not be fooled by the lovely sweet natured business manager. She will sell you a dream but it is really a nightmare!

If you send your child there your will regret it!

BEWARE!

Wow! How long ago was this, when you say the rotten culture goes much deeper what do you mean, is this all asprics schools or just this one?
Can you suggest alternatives?

I heard from a couple of families that had to take their kids out from other schools from the group, that they got too greedy and didn't care.

I’ve been reading some of the threads about Roehampton Gate School recently, and honestly, some of the comments have been really upsetting. I completely understand that people want the best for their children and that not every experience will be the same, but I felt it was important to share another side of the story – especially given the significant improvements the school has made in the last year.

The new headteacher and deputy head have honestly worked wonders. They’ve brought in much-needed structure, introduced a far more consistent and balanced timetable, and – a big one – implemented a strict no-phone policy during school hours. That alone has helped improve focus and reduced a lot of the distractions that used to be a real issue.

The support team has also been strengthened. There’s a noticeable difference in how students are being listened to and helped – emotionally and academically. It’s not perfect (what school is?), but the direction is very clearly forward, and the staff seem genuinely committed to making it a place where all children can thrive.

I also want to mention the school business manager – I’ve seen some posts trying to lay blame in that direction, and it just doesn’t feel fair. Their role is operational, and a lot of what’s happening now is clearly being driven by educational leadership, not admin.

Of course, no school will ever be right for every single child or family, but I think it’s only fair to acknowledge the positive progress when it happens. My child is much happier this year, more engaged, and feels safer – and for me, that says a lot.

If you’re considering Roehampton Gate or have concerns, I’d recommend visiting the school again and speaking directly with the leadership team. They’ve been incredibly open and transparent whenever I’ve raised questions.

Let’s support improvement where it’s happening – and not let past frustrations drown out current progress.

I agree with you. Whilst I remain furious at Aspriscs, for allowing the situation to get as bad as it was in 2023/4 (and it was BAD), the new head made an impact very quickly and I believe has made huge progress in turning things around. It was a leadership issue (or lack of).
The absolute scandal of Aspriscs taking £70k per child per year of taxpayers money to provide such a substandard establishment for so long is another issue. But for anyone considering RGS now - I’d say go and visit, talk to the new leadership team, because things were definitely moving in the right direction by the time my daughter left in May.

Yes, it was bad. I’m glad your child is happy there, that’s great to hear.

Thanks, that’s a great update, we saw Roehampton Gate School this year with the children there, it looked good 😊 we ended up going with a mainstream school with provision as my DDs needs aren’t as great, she’s been in mainstream since reception without too many problems (plus I don’t want to take a place that someone really needs)

TheRareCoralSnail · 02/08/2025 23:50

Hi currently looking at high school in the SEN department I’ve seen mixed reviews of Roehampton gate school mainly negative can anyone tell me their experiences their like behaviour wise and management I have seen a new head has been appointed to!!

Thank you all for the concerning messages about the Roehampton Gate School and also about the most recent ones that shows that the change of leadership team has made a good change overall.
Can someone clarify what is the profile of the children there? Is it for mainly high functioning ASD children? Can someone confirm if they accept ASD children with PDA profile? Do the children learn academic skills adapted to their level of learning? I did the visit and loved the school but when they read my son's EHCP they already said they can not meet needs. I am a bit confused. Thank you!

Hi - my daughter has now left but they definitely had kids there who were ASD with PDA. But maybe they’ve changed their criteria? They offer 2 curriculums, one is conventional ie they work towards GCSEs, one is functional skills.
