Could my DS's diagnosis be ADHD & not ASD ?

DS was diagnosed with ASD at 7 yrs old. He is high functioning, good at maths, music etc. He is in now in year 7 at high school , but is presenting with more ADHD symptoms ( my nephew has ADHD & my husband is now on waiting list for a referral for assessment for ADHD). My DS is very bright, but is a born worrier , he can never switch off , his organisation skills are very lacking, he fixates on favourite things, games, music etc. He also has auditory processing difficulties & wears hearing aids. He has intense focus for things he loves ( he has a myriad of grades on 4 instruments) , but flickers in and out of focus for things he struggles with ( conversation being the main one).
We have done lots of therapies ( SALT , INPP, psychological assessment, Fastforword , the Listening programme , to name the most effective ones).
Now he is at high school his needs have changed. He has never had a one-one TA , but at primary school , from reception to year 4 , he did SALT work with a little SEN group at school once a week for an hour. I'm not sure who to ask fir help at this point , but I can see the pressure of high school without much help ( he has been appointed a lovely key worker who helps him locate the stuff he loses track of every day ! But that's it..) is beginning to take it's toll.
Have any of your DC's diagnosis seemed to morph into something different as they got older ? And if so, did you actively seek an new formal diagnosis, ? I need to find targeted help for him at high school , but I'm not sure how. Thanks xx

In many ways they are separate issues.

The support he gets at school ought to match his needs, whether or not he has any diagnosis at all.
One Yr7 with ASD might not need the same support as another child with ASD. Another child with no diagnosis of anything might need more support from a different child who does have a diagnosis.

So I think you need to think about what needs you feel aren't being met at school, and make an appointment with the SENCo to discuss that.

Separately from that, you might, or might not wish to get referred back to get a secondary diagnosis for your ds. It is not that unusual for people with ASD to also have ADHD, but equally, your description doesn't shout out clear and obvious ADHD either.

Thanks for your help. Yes , I've been thinking that having a meeting with the Senco will be a good start. I think because he is clever , he masks his other difficulties well and they don't perceive any immediate difficulties in school.
