Need a recommendation on weighted blankets

My autistic DS already has a Mela weighted blanket that we spent a small fortune on. He likes the weighted feeling but because he is always hot, he finds the blanket too hot. Anyone found a weighted blanket that is cooling or doesn't result in overheating? I looked at kuddly but they only do single bed size.

Could you make something yourself that would be more suited to his needs?

The overall weight should be 10% of his weight for a blanket

5% of his weight for a lap pad.

This article www.weightedblanketguides.com/guide-blanket-fillings/ details the types of fillings.

You could start with a cushion he likes, take out the inner.

Add a new inner that is made from tightly woven material so no filling can escape, Then try different fillings to see which ones he finds coolest.

You could 'quilt' the inner cushion so the filling remained equal all over, or just put the filling into the inner, and see if he preferred that as he could manipulate the weight inside it to suit himself.

Ready made blankets and cushions are lovely, but home made that comply with all safety regs are much better to get exactly what you want.

If you're not able to make one yourself, ask around for a seamstress in your area to get a quote.

We got one for my daughter from Home Bargains. Cheap, but surprisingly good and used during summer except for when it got really hot. Not sure yet how it will wash.
