Where to go to get an assessment for Attention Deficit Disorder?

My 21 year old DS is currently in the second year of University. Since the start of Secondary school, teachers have pointed out his extreme disorganisation, forgetfulness and his tendency to make careless mistakes. He may also have Dyspraxia. He has poor coordination and was given a laptop to do exams on at College, on account of his illegible handwriting. He has severe problems with sleep and is also very fussy with food (will not eat anything which is a soft texture).

The problems with disorganisation have caused problems since secondary school, but are even more evident at university. I was hoping that DS could be assessed for ADD in order to access additional support with his learning. Possibly access to a study mentor?

If I go to his GP and pursue an assessment through the NHS, it will take too long and he will possibly been thrown out of Uni by then.

Does anyone know if I can pay privately for an ADD assessment? We live in Shropshire.

Yes, you can pay privately. Look at Psychiatry UK and Clinical Partners. Also ask if there’s anyone the University recommends. Psychiatry UK can also be chosen via the NHS right to choose, I think they have paused referrals due to their waiting list but it would be worth checking.

Does DS receive DSA? If not he should apply. He wouldn’t necessarily have to wait for a formal diagnosis.

Thank you for the advice!

No, DS doesn't get DSA. I will look into this.
