16 yo and PIP

We have finally got diagnosis for DC asd and adhd at 16.

I am looking at applying for PIP for them. However my concern is that they are very immature for their age and suffer from severe anxiety and inability to face anything, in part due to the asd and being unable to express how they feel and then just refusing to discuss anything. Won't even allow me to add their email and phone number to repeat medication requests with the gp. Has expressed numerous times that they are never leaving home and don't want any relationships or anything. My heart Sad

I presume PIP is paid into their account? They don't have access at the moment but this is something I am working on with them as currently any money they have would be spent on game and online purchases and not saved. It's all a work in progress and I am working very hard with CAMHS and school and college and other places to try and build some confidence and independence but this isn't going to happen overnight, currently we have 1 step forward and 2 steps back.

So PIP, I can't work as much as I would like due to the care and appointments and support multiple child needs. How do other people manage this with a child who does not have the insight, maturity or ability to manage money? I will be applying for carers too but I need to plan for the future and want to be able to save for them for assistance and help they will need in the future, as well as if they don't attend college (unlikely at this point) I will lose child benefit and tax credits for them and as I can't work any more than I do so that I can support them I don't know the best way to manage this for my child and for the family.

Thank you for any assistance with this....I want to get this right for them!

When you make the initial application you can become his appointee and if he was entitled to PIP, it would go into your bank account.

Word of warning - PIP is taking a long time to process claims at the moment. We phoned to start the application for our Ds in October last year, sent the form back in December and in mid April this year, he's still not been assessed. I had also planned to apply for carers allowance, as I can only work very part time (even then it's difficult, I've got to miss work twice next week, to take him to appointments). But I can't until we hear whether he is entitled to PIP.

The DWP can, with your child's agreement, pay PIP into your bank account, we got letters about this when DS was approaching 16 and DLA was ending. However it is still their money.

I saw this factsheet the other day which might be helpful contact.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/universal_credit_young_person.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0zFmhm-Be5w_5Bgbh_FUkEc_dUCUHTvpAIHYFItXz6u9wb-NXemQk00yE

Oh thank you so much! I really want to do the right thing but have been so worried about money that could be used to really help him be wasted....I will discuss this with him when we fill out the forms.

Worrying that it's taking so long but I will get started today. Thank you for the link too!
