DD14 with ASD and in mainstream - what will happen post 16

DD is in mainstream school year 10 , and i’m concerned that in just over a year she will leaving school .... She cannot stay on at her current schools sixth form as she would not attain the necessary grades and just i don’t know what the best option is for her post 16 ...?

At her current school she has access to a TA who she works very well with in her lessons . This TA is mainly off the back of a boy in DD’s classes who has an EHCP and TA provision , although as Dd has a diagnosis she gets some help

Dd usually goes to LSC at breaks and lunchtimes, where she feels comfortable. But this has been harder during covid as she has often been in a room on her own as year groups have had to be split up

When she returned to school in September she struggled to settle back into school and we had a period of school refusal , but school and her TA worked very hard to get her back in to school and DD did settle in to school again

Since being at home, school have said that the communication and interaction team will be coming when schools return, to help with DD transition back to being at school again

I suppose that i would really like DD to repeat year 10 , as she has missed so much and she is young in the year / an August Birthday, but i know that Dd does not want to do this , or if it is even an option ,,?!

Another thing i have thought about is for her to move to a school that she can study at until she is 18 , but I looked in to this last year and there are very few schools in our area with spaces - the only school with space is not really suitable for DD .

DD has a diagnosis of ASD but does not have an EHCP , as I’ve been told she wouldn’t qualify and they are not often given in our area ,,,

Any advice appreciated!

You should apply for an EHCNA. The only test for one is has or may have SEN and may need SEN provision to be made via an EHCP. DD meets that test. Any other test is unlawful. Don't listen to anyone telling you the school needs to have spent £6k, DD needs to be 2+ years behind, there is little point as DD is Y10, they don't often issue them...

Definitely apply for EHCP. Ime HT said ‘they won’t get one” and they have. It’s a lot of work for school (the application) and they may put it off due to this. My ds wasn’t ‘behind’ average at all, but evidence he wasn’t progressing and has needs so got one.

Agree with above posters. Apply for an EHCNA yourself. Information here:

Schools and LAs frequently tell parents a lot of unlawful bollocks to put them off.

And if you get turned down, appeal. The majority of parents win refusal to assess appeals.
