Hi everyone

My son has very complex special needs, autism and general learning difficulties being non-verbal.

My parents have always 'baby' sat him as a child but now they are older and my son is older it is too much to ask.

I was wondering how other go about finding someone to mind their adult child for a few hours in the evening?

Thanks in advance

I don't know unfortunately.
I have a ds with asd but we haven't ever used a sitter before as I worry other people wouldn't be able to cope with his care needs. bumping for you incase anyone is around that can answer now.

Does your son still attend school? I know some of the TAs at my DD's school do extra childcare out of school for parents. Maybe worth asking there?

Have you tried care.com? They have a special needs section on their website.
I hired our current childcare provider through their website- it took me a few months to interview applicants and make a decision. My mom acted as temporary childcare whilst I was searching. I supplied a little bit of information on their disability and care needs.
Make sure that you trust your gut feeling. Insist on having a safety check done. If possible have the candidate come to your house and ask them politely to play with the child. That way you can gauge if they are suitable for the role or not.
Oh and have a few questions to ask.

Have you tried via social services ?our son had this type of respite when under 18, babysitters who came to the home. About to finish now he's 18 but we are applying to Adult services for the same.

Care.com but also by word of mouth. I've sat for people a few times, more as a favour (but due H moving out soon I need the money so I might register with an agency) I can't be alone. Ask about locally. One girl I'm sitting for monthly, others have been ad hoc eg after school when it's parents evening
