Is anyone's teen illiterate?

I don't just mean "dyslexic" (although that's, in theory, the issue). DS is cognitively able, very creative and practical, you can have a decent conversation etc but for the love of God, just totally, totally incapable of reading or writing. (Think Y1 level) yes he's got an EHCP and he's in a specialist setting but just had the AR where they're talking about future transfer to college/adult services etc and I'd always hoped he'd have some basic functionality by now.

My DS (17) has processing difficulties and although he can read and write and has a large vocabulary, he’s never been able to read a book/engage with the narrative. He can write but is painstakingly slow as he has to process, think of WHAT he wants to say/write and by the time he’s written two words, he’s forgotten the question/story/what’s expected of him. Do you mean this? Or can he not actually sound the letters and read, OP?
