Hi, my son is 15 & has severe ASD with high levels of anxiety and some behavioural problems. We really need to find him a barber/hairdresser but don't know of anyone locally who would be able to manage him, I live on the Wirral. He's had it cut in school in the past but this isn't really working out. Any suggestions would be much appreciated x

Hi, If I lived anywhere near you I'd recommend the lady who does Ds as she is wonderful and has endless patience, not to mention bribes in the form of biscuits. We used to have a terrible time but now he doesn't mind at all (only a dry cut, still no chance of washing it!). Hopefully someone near you has such a gem.

The only thing I can think of is to ask if you think he would be less stressed if his hair was cut at home rather than going to a salon? You might be able to find a local mobile hairdresser who is willing to give it a go. The other thing that worked over time was popping into the salon whenever passing, even if he wasn't getting a haircut, so he became less anxious about being there. Of course you need an understanding hairdresser who is happy for you to do that! Could you ask any other parents at the school where they go? I think it might come down to you visiting some friendly-looking places (rather than the trendy/loud music sort) and explaining your problem. You'd be surprised how many people turn out to have their own child or other relative with autism and will want to try and help if they can, even if it's just to point you in the right direction. I hope you have some luck.
