Think DD has dyspraxia???

Hi all,
Wasn't really sure whether to post this on teenagers or special needs but can be moved if necessary! Ive a strong feeling my DD16 has dyspraxia she has all the symptoms described when it comes to motor skills etc and can't tie her laces , use a knife properly etc it has been a family joke for years that she was "clumsy" never realised it was actually something should I get her tested at this age or is there even any test? Would it change her school life in any way if she was diagnosed etc? Any help and advice would be appreciated , thank you

Yes, she can be assessed by an educational psychologist and there's a lot of things she can do to improve it.

Speak to your gp about a referral.

You may want to get the books by Mary colley and by Victoria Briggs, lots of useful advice in there.

The things you describe in your OP sound like dyspraxia, but it often isn't just physical difficulties. Does she have problems with handwriting e.g. it is slow and/or illegible? And does she have problems with organisation and time management? If so, these could be part of dyspraxia too. If you have other children, does it feel (to her and or to you) that she has to work extra hard to achieve the same thing? These are the sort of issues that my DS1 has, and he has mildly dyspraxic

The things she might get at school if she is assessed with dyspraxia:
Be able to take notes in class on a laptop
Be able to type homework
Be able to type exams
Get extra time in exams - maybe 25% extra
Get study skills support from the Senco

Is your DD16 about to go into the 6th Form? If so, these things will really help her cope with the higher expectations in the 6th Form.

I would get your DD tested OP. It would be a great help for her at school and uni. DD3 is Dyspraxic and going to uni next week. She applied for and got DSA. She was assessed and has been given a lot of equipment to help her. This includes a laptop,printer and an electronic note recorder for recording her lectures. She has also got 4 hours a month study skills support.

Just to add to my previous comment. Tell you DD to keep going it may take a little longer to get there than her peers do and she may have disappointments along the way but she can get there. DD3 is Dyspraxic and also has another learning difficulty, Anyway she is 21 finished BTECH extended Diploma in IT in June and got Distinction Merit Merit and is off to umiversity next Saturday to do a computer degree
