Travel insurance

I’ve tried today to set up travel insurance for myself and my son as I have finally felt brave (or foolish) enough and have booked a holiday abroad. I realised that I have travel insurance included with something else, via Aviva, so this morning I tried to activate it and found I needed to speak to a medical advisor to see if they could cover my son.

Long story short it turns out that they will provide him with insurance and some of his diagnoses will be covered/included (ADHD and FASD) but ASD is excluded from the cover. I was told that this means that if anything I was claiming for was caused by ASD it wouldn’t be covered. When I tried to get some clarity on how they would decide that I was told that it would depend if a doctor said it was.

Has anyone else experienced this and is it something I should challenge? Or is it not an issue to use this insurance anyway? I’m aware that there are other companies that will offer insurance that does cover ASD, but don’t want to pay for that if it’s not necessary since I already have this insurance! But equally don’t want to risk not being covered!

It feels so random that they are happy to cover ADHD/FASD but not ASD. Given that you can’t really unpick one from the other in terms of his challenges.

Having dealt with needing to claim on travel insurance previously, more than once, I would not go without full cover. It isn’t just if the claim is directly related to autism that it could be refused. It could also affect you if, for example, treating an unrelated condition was more complicated because of autism, e.g. if a general anaesthetic is required because of DS’s autism where it wouldn’t otherwise.

I have DC with complex medical needs. We have used InsuranceWith. We have previously also used Staysure, but I have heard some negatives about them more recently.

You might not need such a specialist company. You could try other more mainstream options before resorting to the more specialist companies.

Thanks, that’s good advice. I guess I’ll be back on the phone to more companies today!
