Dyslexia naysayers

WTF? It seems like there is a board of synthetic phonics evangelists systematcially monitoring this board and butting in as soon as dyslxia gets mentioned.

Mumsnet threads on reading and spelling

(There basic premise is that dyslexia doesn't exist, it's just that children aren't being taught synthetic phonics in reception which are calling all of their difficulties...)

I get enough of this shit in real life. I wish I could avoid this in MN.

Anyone from RRF who is reading this post - please leave us alone! Synthetic phonics is a good way to teach children to read. But it is not a cure for dyslexia. By continually rubbishing dyslexia you are only adding more stress to our already very stressful lives.

I have just spent the last 3 years fighting with the SENCO of my DD in the infants who believes, as the RRF proponents do, that Read Write Inc is the answer to every question. So despite having spent the last 3 years trying to teach her to read with synthetic phonics, and failing, there only solution is more synthetic phonics.

Thankfully I have changed school for the juniors, and the SENCO there is really clued up. And uses Read Write Inc in conjunction with observing the kids and trying to address their individual problems.

Until you have observed my child you have no idea what her problems are. So leave your evangalism and sweeping generalisations for the political arena.

I'm with you.

Phonics and synthetics phonics are fine, but when the letters are skipping around all over the place, they are not going to solve everything (and how much faith can you have in system which cannot spell its own name?)

Have to say though that I do think that pushing kids to read before they are ready exacerbates underlying problems in susceptible children.

totally agree. ti'm dylexic, after gruelling 3 hr interrogation to check i was not stupid (this was over 20ys ago). decided i was, with a reading age half my age, cannot do phonics, and now with ds starting school, and looking at it, still cannot do it.

mummytime · 10/07/2010 12:07

I agree. But I'm surprised they haven't turned up yet.

'I thought it would be useful to keep a thread running here so that RRF'ers could go straight to them and offer really reliable information.'
Their arrogance is breathtaking!

Thanks TribunalGoer. Seems like I'm not alone in being annoyed by them.

Hopefully they'll leave us alone now....

What! Asd doesn't exist!

Let me guess - bad parenting? Your kid is just spoilt? Oh Tribunal - don't send him there. You don't need this. He's better off at home glued to teletubbies then going there.

Next they'll be telling you that vaccines are safe and don't cause autism....

Why would it seem so difficult to grasp that some people's brains aren't wired to learn to read with synthetic phonics.

DS is in his second year of readwrite inc., and I don' think there is anything wrong with it, but it doesn't change the fact that at 6 he can't reliably distinguish a b from a d or write an s the same way twice.

SanctiMoanyArse · 11/07/2010 15:49

mm ds2's the same

as is dh, who afterr years of flunking is doing a degree and getting grades up to and including 100 with me just proof reading (not correcting, just yay or nay as needed

Or indeed me ats chool, so far ahead in English that the Head had to tutor, maths in sn classes

Assuming dyslexia is anything like my dyscaculia then these people aren't even beginning to get it- if I do sums numbers shift, rules warp and I see figures not even there: I paxcked in a job with figures when I started at the actual number (IIRC 666600 and could not see the diffence to 666660, aqnd why tallys would not make. I am not dense, just cannot see fdigures

OTOH I an do uni level stats if writtenin longhand- eg three added to five etc
