ds1 (3.11) is getting quite vocal but I cant work out why his words come out the way they do? winkie = winka water = wakie so he can say ee at the end of a word so why doesnt it come out when he says winkie. And a computer is a bombaboogie . Its like I have to learn a foreign language as well as all the signing so I can work out what word he is trying to say and just when i master it he learns a new sound so it all changes again. anyway he makes up for it when he says i wuff you mummy .

DD1 was like this for a long time before a few clear words started to creep in and now even she can laugh at the way she used to say things.
I think it was the stage where she had more speech sounds than before ( 3 months of twice weekly therapy) but before she was really able to blend any of them .
I eventually tried to pick one of her "gibbberish" words at a time - starting with the shorter/easier ones and just repeat back the correct version every single time and tried to get her to at least try to say it. One word could have taken months though
Sorry not much help Very frustrating.

He does have some clear words and quite a few that are almost clear. its just some have no reason to it like if he replaced an a at the end of a word with an e i could follow the rules but its just random.
Because he is imprroving i can now laugh about it and we keep practising. Before christmas he couldnt even say mummy. Today he said mummy saturday tommorow no school, school on monday. saturday ice cream van with sprinkles and i understood it all!!

Aww that's lovely
Random is just what I've come to expect I think. Or as someone once said, it's like an intermittent electrical fault - sometimes works, sometimes not (though should eventually become more reliable!)

I think they call this 'neologisms', children with asd often do this, make up some words just like 'bombaboogie' for computer... also with my DS's way of speaking somtimes!

sodit · 10/07/2010 11:11

its not a made up word its his attempt at saying it we break it down into smaller parts like com and he can nearly say it but when he puts it altogether it turns into a bombabogie. he does make up words such as a fan is a windy which i think is a better name

we love tick tock = clock in our house they are so cute but sometime very furstrating

bubble2bubble · 10/07/2010 13:03

I think it's great that they can find ways around things. Clock is a really difficult word to say ( double consonant - uurgh ) - dd1 said tick tock for a long time as well. Now she does say clock, though probably I am the only one who knows what she means..
Still says pootor for computer though that is massive progress from something completely unintelligible she said before.
For some reason duck is still really difficult so we still have quack quack ( or something that sounds vaguely like that )
I'm guessing there's an element of auditory processing involved as well, where DC thinks they are repeating the word correctly, but in fact it doesn't sound like it to us

LOL DD1 used to say the "go, go , go, go house" to mean my friend's house which was about an hour's drive away. Couldn't obviously say friend's name or name of place, but knew it was a long way away.

BigWeeHag · 10/07/2010 19:17

DS1 used to say "bonbooder" for computer. Now he says com-boo-der. Getting there! Asks for a wink (drink). We've been working on "l" a lot recently, so now he says "I yyyyyyyyyy-ull-UFF you," PMSL.
