Going to France with DS2 and his food allergies - help!

We are taking as much as we can with us, but the camper van freezer is tiny and we can't fit in his Swedish Glace ice cream. Does anyone know of an alternative that's sold in France? It needs to be dairy, gluten, egg and nut free (also no coconut milk). He'll eat mango sorbet at a pinch too.

Really don't think I can stand hearing 'i- cream...i-cream...i-cream...-i-cream preeze..i-cream' five hundred times a day.

Sorry - know this is a minor problem btw

Ooh, tricky. Can't help on what is sold in France, but have you.thought about getting an extra freezer for the camper van?

They can be pricey, but this is a problem you are going to face each time - if not ice cream then something else! - I think you can get ones that run off the cigarette lighter thingy. We solved food issues this way for yravelling. Thankfully we only needed extra fridge space, but also have a cooker for use on long drives (we don't have a camper van, BTW, just a people carrier). Makes days out/travelling to dh Scotland so much easier.

If you are going to a site with electrical hookup, you can also get converters so cigarette rub things can run on mains, has been invaluable for us in b&bs etc

Sphil, I'll ask around for you - I know a couple of people with serious allergies who might have some ideas (and I live in France!)

Thanks both - we did consider the freezer idea when we thought we were going to have to take 10 gluten free loaves - but thankfully we've discovered we can bake it in the Cobb we've just bought! Will look into it - a friend did say we might be able to borrow one from him. We're very short of space though, so would be easier not to!

Would an icecream maker work?

BriocheDoree · 09/07/2010 13:23

Right, apparently there's a brand which is based on rice milk, and it's called natturativa (it's Italian). The person I know buys it online from a shop called Houra, so I don't know where it would be available in the supermarket.

Naturattiva
Glace cacao au lait de riz Bio , 750ml
Glace Italienne

She's even given me a link for the ingredients, but it's in Italian www.naturattiva.it/agricoltura_biologica/gelato_di_riso_vegetale_senza_lattosio_23.html which might or might not help!

I'm guessing that either one of the organic supermarkets (natoora, biocoop) would be the best place to find it, or one of the big hypermarkets (auchan, carrefour, geant). Certainly the big hypermarkets would carry good sorbet if ice cream wasn't available.

Hope this helps! Must be quite tough having a child with SN AND allergies!!

Oh that's wonderful BriocheDoree - thanks! Whether we'll find a big supermarket in the Auvergne wilderness is hard to say! But I'll look out for it.
