Hi, some of you may know that DS has recntly being given a dual dx: autism and sp. and lang. disorder.
He is starting school in september in MS.

DS has been attending a lang.unit p/t and a MS nursery. He is on action+ with useless IEPs (well the one from MS nursery is useless, the one from the unit is good)

I have applied for SA...only just now (wish i'd done it sooner).
There are some things (dx and Cahms recommendations, as well as letting them know i've now apllied for SA) i need to tell the school SENco and the HT, but i have been told we've had our transition meeting and SENco will contact me...at some point (possibly not before september).

Should i write a letter to HT and SENco with everything i need to say and drop it to the school reception? Should i write an email to them? or should i insist i get an appointment with them asap (not garanteed to happen)? what would you do?

Thanks.

Have you not met the SENCo yet? It is a bit tricky to ask for an appointment when they have said they will contact you.

I would write wit all rthe stuff you need to tell them along with a note saying.

I know that you will be in touch soon about the meeting but thought it would be helpful to provide you with some info in advance. As you'll appreciate we're apprehensive about the transition to new school and we really to our meeting with you.

We have met the SENco, two months ago during our transition meeting with EP.
But some things have changed 2 weeks ago, DS was finally dx, Cahms have made some recommendations which i feel should be passed on pronto, Autism outreach should really be involved asap, and of course i've now apllied myself for SA (i think they ought to know).

Have asked last week to see Senco, was told because we've had out meeting and she isn't available atm, i should wait for her to contact me but that may not be before september.
I'm a bit p**s off, time is running out with the summer break nearly there.
So i thought a letter to inform them of the above since they don't seem to want to speak to me again until spetember.

I would ring and try again esp since there are a no. of changes. They really should be making themselves available. I don't understand schools sometimes, bit more prep work makes dividends later. If this fails, take the info into the school and try see someone whilst there.

Also has the teacher or SENCO seen ds at nursery or Lang unit, in an environment he is use to, I would have thought this would be v. useful.

One of the parents has sent up a SEN parents club, it meets tonight. Am going and I'll find out what our new the school is like.

Photocopy everything drop into office with note asking for meeting to discuss the new information

Thanks.

Well senco was supposed to be seing DS at MS nursery last friday but it was cancelled at the last minute.
And the lamguage unit is making their own arrangements, i think one of the SALT is going to go the school.

This is frustrating. It feels like 'well you've had your meeting now p*off!' I'm not impressed really.

Same thing about DS missing two of inductions sessions (hospital app. for asd assesssment, and now he has chicken-pox) i've been down to the school to ask if anymore sessions could be arranged. And nothing can be done about that!

I know that things are pretty busy in schools at this time of year but it sounds like you're being fobbed off quite a bit. Unless the SENCO is off school for some reason then I would have thought they would be able to manage a phone call.

I would write a letter to the SENCO (at our school the HT wouldn't have any real involvement in this) and hand it in at the school.

I'm surprised too that they wouldn't be able to arrange for your ds to visit. It might be that you would need to stay with him if it wasn't a session arranged specifically for new starters, but otherwise I don't see what the problem would be. With ds1 I spent a morning in the classroom with him while he joined in with the Reception children who were already at school.

Exactly Coppertop. That's what i think, i was intending to stay with DS anyway, i have done so for the previous sessions.

Definitely forward on by hand or in an email everything that you want the SENCO to a) know b) do.

Urge her to make contact with you at her earliest possible convenience. You are only asking for a 30 min meeting or phonecall. It's her job.
