White Board Markers

Hi folks,
I haven't posted on here for quite a while but I have a question about chemical
sensitivity. My daughter is 5.5yrs and has a strong reaction to any airborne
chemicals. She has Aspergers syndrome, ADHD and multiple food intolerances also.

She is in a mainstream school, who are amazingly supportive and understanding of
her very specialised diet, as well as eliminating any necessary chemicals.

A concern has been raised today because of her intolerance to drywipe markers /
white board pens. She is going into a year group next year (and the consecutive
years) where they use the whiteboard heavily.
I am just appealling to you as a wealth of useful knowledge in this department
to see if there is something that can be used as an alternative for the main
white board (chinagraph pencils are already being used for individual boards).

Thanks in advance
Snoz

i'm afraid this suggestion won't come cheap, but most of the classrooms in my school use interactive whiteboards which have rendered the use of markers pretty much obsolete.

Thanks for your reply, she goes to a very small village school, I think they have not had white boards for that long to be honest. There is no way they can afford interactive boards, although the school I used to teach in had them and they were brilliant!

RR, I have an interactive board but I use A4 whiteboards and pens all the time with my class for Literacy and maths. We have laptops too.
If it's the individual ones she's using, rather than the class one, how about a really low-key solution.
Thick pad of scrap paper and a felt tip? Or crayon?

Yep, interactive white board is the way to go, the head may be able to access budgets cetrally on the back of your dd's needs & upgrade.
Our small village primary has them so it is possible.

What happened to all the ELC money that was floating around a few years ago, specifically for ICT enabling?

www.free-press-release.com/news-eco-friendly-whiteboard-markers-allow-student-to-return-to-class-126 3914279.html is an article about an American student with hypersensitivity to xylene...

Perhaps the school would buy some of these: auspenmarkers.com/products/. It would get them a 'tick' on some eco-schools/green-schools award too no doubt as they're refillable and aren't made of plastic! It might be worth contacting the manufacturers and asking if you/the school could be sent one on trial with a view to lots being ordered over the next little while and you spreading the word (if they're any good).

Making a note in case I need an alternative in the future.
Thank you SE13Mummy
