Dyslxia and trouble with words

Does anyone else's dyslexic child have tremendous difficulties remembering / learning words? (to say not to read/write)

My DD is 7 and fairly badly dyslexic. I.e. at the end of year 2 she is almost 2 years behind where she should be in reading and writing.

She has this really weird thing where she just can't remember new words. For example I bought her a teddy yesterday and she wanted to name her Lucy. But then every hour for the next 2 days she's come to me to ask me what she named her teddy. She just can't remember 'Lucy', even though she originally chose it. Very weird.

(This is just one example. There are many. Basically she can't remember words.)

School have had her assesed by SALT and apparantly she's very average at everything. Her speech is certainly normal and fine.

Anyone else have this or no what it is?

Thanks

Myself, ds1 and ds2 all have dyslexia ( poor ds2 really didn't get a break as dyslexia is just one of a list if issues) And yup we do this..

remembering names is a pain in the bum too.. I try and use a persons name enough in conversation so that it goes from short term working memory to my long term bit.

If I can help in anyway just yell. Dyslexia hasn't stopped me from doing anything I wanted to including getting a degree and a career.
I just had to work hard and find different ways around it.

Yes that's common. Poor working memory and word finding difficulties are very common areas of weakness for dyslexics. My ds does it - the word just disappears out of his head mid- sentence. He gets very frustrated.

Thanks guys. So nothing actually helps? You just have to work around this?

(Hmmmm, I wonder if playing vocab tapes to her when she's asleep would work.... LOL )

I haven't found much that works really.. But it does get better the older you get.
