My child has failed the hearing test

This isn't telling us anything we already didn't know but we are not sure how we can help him.

He passed a hearing test at 2 weeks of age even though at that time he wasn't reacting to any noises.

He has been tested privately and was at the lower level of normal.

He was tested yesterday at school and hears at 35 instead of 25. The school nurse is retesting him next month and then he will be referred to audiology if he fails again.

No trouble at school though the teacher does admit they speak loudly.

Is there anything I can do to help him or can you tell me what will happen at the sudiologist.

TIA. Be back later to check as school run now.

Have you seen the info here it's a pretty good site. Audiology could do a couple of different tests, wearing headphones and press a button when you hear a noise and then speech discrimination, something along the lines of, can you show me where the duck is etc. Depends on how old your ds is really and what they think he can do.

As to what you can do, just common sense things that you probably already do. Like face him when you speak to him, make sure he's understood you by repeating back what you have said, give him time to take things in when he's spoken to, don't give complicated instructions, repeat when necessary and be aware of background noise that may mask what you are saying. almost forgot! They will probably also do his tymps to see if he has any glue behind his eardrum that could be a problem. It's like a little probe type thing that goes in the ear, doesn't hurt at all.
