Would a social story help..

I explain appointments to ds along the lines of a sevice or repair for a car .. And explain that our bodies also need a service or sometimes a repair.

Lots of short explination about what he'll see and what migh happen and why.

Works well for ds2 .. Hth

I always have trouble getting dd1 to go to the doctors but luckily once we are there she is willing to be examined (whilst gritting her teeth). Doctors don't seem very understanding with ASD children, mine doesn't have a clue about AS and thinks dd1 has not got it .

I always try to explain to dd1 'why she needs to go' and she always tries to talk me round to thinking she's fine. Sometimes i can bribe her, at the moment she is collecting football cards and will do anything for a pack of cards.

Could you make him a chart/list of things he can tick of (waiting in the waiting room, examination, talk to GP and then go home), you could then add something after the visit that he likes to do (with my dd1 it would be a trip to a cafe or a picnic).

Or another thing that works with my dd1 (sometimes) is doing a practice run/role play at home (you be the doctor).

Good luck.

Useful page on NAS website with suggestions here: Going to the doctor.

This is quite a nice little online story with pictures (about an outpatients visit but similar to GP).

Strategies we use (long term planning rather than instant success)

  1. Bring ds along when dd or I have an appt, to pick up repeats, when popping in to book an appt
  2. Bribe with a sticky lolly every visit
  3. Book only with the dr who always runs to time
  4. Talk about dr every time we pass the surgery and any time someone's got a health issue
  5. Early learning dr kit (allegedly for dd who is younger)
  6. Make friends with the receptionists
  7. Register with a small practice so less changes
  8. Social stories and relevant picture books
  9. Book a double appt eg one for my minor issue and one for ds. 2 min for me leaves 18 min for him!
10. Go by myself to explain the problem without ds interrupting and then book again to bring him for check
