Yay, a debs thread! Good luck. I hope they have all done their homework and give you some confidence in their methodology and their decision!

Go debs, go debs, go debs!!

debs40 · 23/06/2010 17:12

Aaah, guys, you're great! Meeting is at 11.30. Have had to run around trying to find someone to look after DS2 as nursery can't have him tomorrow. Think I've got it sorted now.

I must admit I was worrying about it last week but I'm too knackered to think straight this week. DS2 has been off ill and I've been trying to fit in work around him. Then there's the exhaustion of the England game!

Will keep you posted.

Thinking of you Debs. Remember you've got a MN army backing you!

StarOfValkyrie · 24/06/2010 13:24

Just checking in and hoping it wasn't too bad. Hope debs doesn't feel obliged to report back to the people in her computer tonight though if she's not up to it.

debs40 · 24/06/2010 13:53

Thanks guys. We''ve got a dx of Aspergers with a co-morbid Sensory Processing Disorder.

The Psychiatrist who prepared the report has said in it that he requires a statutory assessment. Parent Partnership however tell me this means nothing to the LA.

Anyhow, just off to check through the report so it can go off to school.

Thanks again for all your support!

StarOfValkyrie · 24/06/2010 14:04

Hi debs, hope it was okay. Were you happy with the way it was conducted? Are you happy with the dx? (sorry, course not, but you know what I mean!)

debs40 · 24/06/2010 14:36

The meeting only lasted about 30 mins mainly because I had nothing to ask! The woman (the psychiatrist) who has taken over our case from the awful head of the ASD team is really nice and approachable and actually I think Asperger's is just about right for him.

I kind of want all this side of things to end too!

StarOfValkyrie · 24/06/2010 14:43

Oh well good. Hope that you can move on now. I suppose it is the statement trudge next? Or is that on hold?

debs40 · 24/06/2010 14:49

No, let education battles commence. They have put in the report that he requires a SA and that he needs adult help daily.

PP say this means jack shit to the LA though! Put focus is Tribunal not the LA bastardos! Sorting a meeting with school with head and teachers from this year/next to look at provision and what can be done out of their budget

StarOfValkyrie · 24/06/2010 14:52

Okay, so it looks like you'll have to bear in mind a 3rd party tribunal in everything you do.

Make sure you are reasonable but persistant and challenge anything you think might be used as evidence against you, and put in writing back to them anything that you think you could use in evidence against them.

Sure you know all this. Have a rest today and this weekend though.

sugarcandymountain · 24/06/2010 16:06

I'm glad you've got your answers and confirmation, debs. Does it say Asperger's on the report (rather than the broader term of ASD)? I would be a bit concerned about that, as some LAs and DLA treat them differently.

I specifically asked for ASD to be written on our report rather than AS and I do think it's made a difference. Also, with the DSM changes in the next few years, I think AS is going to be used less rarely as a dx.

debs40 · 24/06/2010 16:29

Thanks. It does say Asperger's. I will clarify that with the clinician. Surely, if they recategorised, anyone with an Asperger's dx would be recategorised as ASD anyway. You couldn't simply wipe out a whole tranche of people (AS is an ASD after all irrespective of whether that is written). I mean what would Tony Attwood do??!!

You know I have picked up DS today and his teacher didn't even bother to ask about what happened. She knows it was today.

I then notice he actually has his home/school book in his bag - a rare occurence with this teacher. It has a note in it about 'encouraging' him to eat his lunch.

He had agreed to try something for the first time today. We do so on the basis he can try it and not be forced to eat if he doesn't like. This has had to be taken up with SENCO, head, MDSAs etc. He tells me he was told by a dinnerlady it was ok for him to go but his teacher told him he had to eat something so he stayed and tried it.

Little cow! I am so angry about that. She knows that is not what has been agreed. I could well end up with DS saying he's not trying anything new after that

StarOfValkyrie · 24/06/2010 17:47

debs, my view is that asd over aspergers is often more helpful, because apergers is an asd iyswim, but aspergers can often get dismissed as 'not much of a' asd, when actually problems associated can often be more complex and require MORE support.

But it is up to you which you think will be more helpful. I expect in light of the proposed changes they won't mind changing it to asd if you ask, HOWEVER, aspergers does bring with it higher academic expectations so you see, it's a bit of a headache.

debs40 · 24/06/2010 18:03

Thanks Star, I have asked for the clinician's comments and asked them to specify the connection - i.e. Asperger's is an ASD.

I think I can't do more than that unless there is specific guidance indicating that ASD is a more appropriate dx.

We do have a stand alone dx of Sensory Processsing Disorder as well which I know really helped a friend locally. It is the SPD which really affects DS's access to the curriculum.
