Hello ladies

Can someone tell me what qualifies a household for a Council Tax reduction based on disability.

My DS has:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Sensory Integration Difficulties
  • Speech delay and difficulties
  • Overall delayed development

ANyone?

in our area you only get a band reduction if you have a room specifically adapted for a disabled person to use

yup - same here - you have to have made alterations to the house specifically for the disabled person in order to qualify for a reduction.

ASD and Sensory, you can give one room over completely to therapy or sensory perhaps. Not entirely sure though.

Phone the Welfare Rights dept nearest to you, Riven. Once they take your details they can stop the demands and work something out.

Rivan.. Don't panic I have a friend who is a baliff and works just with council tax.
If you can't get it sorted out with welfare rights.. Have a chat with the baliffs involved ( if it gets that far).. They will and are able to come to a payment arrangement ( over 12 months if need be).
It can and will be sorted so you don't have to find that big amount all in one go or by the end of the week.
You do however need to talk to people to get this option for you.

Riven, is it possible your DH really did pay it? It may be the council's mistake? If so, there is an ombudsman who can help with a dispute if you should need it, you can find advice here www.lgo.org.uk/complaints-about-council-tax/

Thanks everyone.

My son is not in a wheelchair or physically disabled.

I just wanted to check as my councils website does not make it very clear what the criteria is!

My son get full whack disability allowance for his problem with self care so I thought best check! Especially as our council tax is one of the highest in the country!!!!
