Three weeks ago I phoned my HV for a referal for ds for a hearing test. Today I saw her at clinic for my dd and asked her how long the referals take and she said 'a long time at the moment', so I said 'how long?' the reply 'I couldn't say.'

Right, stupid but perhaps it is possible she doesn't know. So, I asked her for the phone number of the audiology department so I could ring myself to which replied 'I don't know what the number is, I don't think they have one'.

How can I make decisions about ds' future without basic information. What on EARTH is going on in my borough? It's not a big deal in the scheme of things, just another niggle but fgs, these people don't even pretend they are attempting to be accountable or deliver quality.

We wouldn't be sharing the same HV by any chance???

I have an issue with my HV, other than weighing babies at the new baby clinic they are utterly useless!!
HV was my fisrt port of call when DS was 2, and i expressed my concerns at his developmental check-up. She fobbed me off with a "he 'll catch up!"
But give her some due (a tiny bit) , she did refer him to SAlt.

Then later, i mentioned further worries with DS when DD was born,... again dismissed totally. She was supposed to get the behavioural nurse to call me , never got a phone call.

Then when nursery expressed their concerns, they called the HV to come and observe DS. She did. And phoned me up 3 or 4 days later to ask if it was ok to refer DS to a paed.
I said yes, of course.
3 months later, still nothing in the post re: paed appointment. Phoned HV, she wasn't in, left 2/3 messages, she never called back!
In the end , i went to GP , who promptly refered DS to the paed, got the appointment 4 weeks later.

Now DD was due her 2 y. check up, couldn't make the appointment, so phoned HV to re-book, was told can't find the app. diary, so HV would call back. Two weeks later still no phone call. I called agin, was told she would send another app.letter....still waiting another 4 weeks on!!

Sorry for the rant... i 'm so fed up with my local HV office, they are so crap they deserve a medal for it!

Our health visitor seems to have 4 distinct functions.

  1. To ask you how you are coping but fail to listen to the answer.
  2. Nod and look patronisingly concerned.
  3. Give you a leaflet that tells you nothing at all if you have half a braincell
  4. To try to recruit you to the oppressive and weird under 5s centre with the parenting classes and such. [shudder]
