Motability newbie, help!

Hi all,

DS1 currently gets highest level DLA for mobility (until 2011) as he couldn't walk at all, at 4 he can now walk about 1/4 mile on a good day. We are considering getting a car on motability as with DS2 as well we're finding public transport increasingly difficult.

So any hints/tips? Should we try to get it soon? Has anyone heard of any cuts?

Thanks riven, we'd need an ordinary car. It's more as DS2 is getting bigger DH (who does most of the care) is finding it harder and harder to get the boys about (plus our families all live 100+ miles away and trains cost £100 a trip). DS1 has CP and severe ASD, and it's getting to the point where if we take him to an activity and he gets distressed, having to drag him back on public transport is unkind. We live in Zone 3 in London so taxis are pretty prohibitive and we'll probably be moving further out as rent is going through the roof here.
DS1 is due to start MS school in Jan but we live within 1.5 miles, would transport still be available for such a short distance?

Only remembered because I got caught out .This time we have 5 years before have to renew Am just waiting to hear about charity application before I decide on which car so can be sure ds chair will fit

Probably not on normally look at if over 2 miles though you could argue that since ds is incaperable of travelling it.though be aware they might give ds and dh a buspass as so near

laumiere · 20/06/2010 09:52

We keep having this problem! DS is too big to fit on the back of DS2's buggy, DS2 isn't walking yet and DH can't manage DS1's major and DS2's buggy too. So both boys miss out on things. (I'm at work in the week when all of the appointments/groups happen).

Yes sadly they don't consider effect on other children .is ds2 to heavy for back pack carrying?

roundthebend4 · 20/06/2010 10:23

I often have to take dd out of school when ds3 has late appointments or one further away .We can't have hospital transport because can't take dd and she is 7 so can't exactly leave her home alone.

Look at what cars there are and phone up ask them would you be able get a car with 12 months to run least have clear idea

laumiere · 20/06/2010 14:11

Thanks, will try that! I hadn't considered the backpacks (am v short but DH is tall so may work for him!)

if you live in london you should be eligible for a taxi card for short journeys, check out your council website for details.
