SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

So is a child who is on the 7th percentile for speech and language "fine" or would you say they need SALT input?

Ds was assessed today, with the above outcome, and SALt basically sent us away saying nothing to worry about, just that I should concentrate on working on his sounds. Is she right?

7th centile for what?

StarOfValkyrie · 17/06/2010 17:36

no, she's not right, but what she is saying is that her caseload is already full twice over with children on the 2nd percentile.

agree though, percentile for what?

comprehension

It very much depends on the test. The Reynell Developmental Language Scale uses an 'average range' of 17-84, I think. DD1 is on the 5th centile for comprehension & is described as 'severe delay'.

silverfrog · 17/06/2010 17:46

is it a standard distribution? I've never been given a centile score for dd1, so don't know how they work.

if like the height/weight charts, isn't 9th and above considered "normal" (albeit low, obv)?

I would complain, and see where it gets oyu.

SanctiMoanyArse · 17/06/2010 17:52

Here it's 5th to receive help.

But in turth you;d need that across the board. ds3 got his because he was on 1st.

StarOfValkyrie · 17/06/2010 18:11

It's all nonsense. DS was on the 2nd so he got help. The help was rubbish and I complained no end and did my own thing. Now he's on the 34th percentile, but because I 'got nasty' they have already increased the help and given him a more senior person

I suppose what I am saying is that if you think she needs help then don't take no for an answer.

TotalChaos · 17/06/2010 18:14

I've always been told that 17th centile was normal. So on that basis I would be hopping mad emkana. having said that, any help received would, I suspect, be likely to be having SALT in asessing/advisory role, with you doing shedloads with him yourself anyway.

I don't know what the name of the test she did with him is, but he got a score of 35 which she said was at the bottom end of average, an average score being between 35 and 65 I think.

That's what I thought, it would probably just be me having to do it anyway so...

it's just so depressing [sigh]

Yes sadly that is the case of doing it yourself and or complaining ds is on the 1st and I had to kick up a stink because he was classed as to severe to help so you can't win
