i have just got in and read the SLT report on my ds. she has put that he has a severe receptive language disorder. this has shocked me a bit as he has one session left of his six session and this is the first time it has been mentioned. she normally tells me hes just a bit delayed. does anyone know how i can help him at home as she is now on hoilday untill his last session in two weeks time. i really dont want to wait for ideas any longer, as i have been asking her what i can do with him at home for weeks now and am getting no where. in the report she has mentioned the nursery doing the Black sheep narrative program with him, again i have no idea what that is.

very quick reply (not sure of your ds' age/diagnosis/level) - Hanen's It Takes Two To Talk (www.winslow-cat.com/cgi-bin/winslow.storefront stock it - don't pay crazy amazon marketplace prices) & More than Words are great.

Teach Me to Listen & Obey DVDs are v. good for receptive delays too. You will have to be proactive - SALT can't really address receptive issues, they just don't have the resources.

If you search for posts by Lingle on this forum & development - she has lots of useful advice about using pictures etc to improve understanding in receptive delay.

Thank you Phlebas.
my ds is 4yrs and 6 months. originally all his proplems were medical. he has renal failure and PUV. in the last year and a half it became aparent his speech, social skills and behaviour were not at the same level as his peers. after testing i was told he is delayed, but no real diagnosis has been given, just the receptive language disorder.

Kitty - my DS had a severe receptive delay at 3 - much improved over the years, but still not quite normal - what I did once I realised he had problems was to strip back language completely, lots of gestures, pointing, photographs, visuals, caveman short sentences - I stopped assuming he understood pretty much anything - and built up from scratch again, even reading books to him I would simply it all.

I would also recommend Hanen, as it gives lots of helpful practical advice about how to incorporate language beneficial activities into all aspects of daily life.

Hi all, thank you, you have all given me some great things to do and lots of stuff to read. i have ordered it takes two to talk and will look for other Hanen book. i feel much better now that i can be active in helping him. my dp keeps telling me i have control issue's, but i think you have to make the effort to know whats going on with them.
