Body Brushing - Help!

I have been brushing dd 4 times a day after doing an intensive 2 week brushing programme for a few months. It's been pretty successful, our sensory ot has been providing us with the brushes.

I tested a different brush for OT and it was pretty useless. These useless brushes (with sponge underneath) have now replaced the old firmer oval ones and brushing is having no effect with them. We're back to square one shortly as the last old brush won't last much longer

Anybody have any ideas on where I can try to find decent surgical scrub brushes? I don't know anyone that works in a hospital and would probably need to get a few different ones as some are too soft.

Bumping this as I want to know too

Sorry, but I was a scrub nurse at a large teaching hospital in a specialist department until 5 years ago and we always used the square brushes with the sponge underneath. I have never used an oval one.

I find that any massage therapy or brushing therapy works for me. It's the sensation of pressure that helps retrain our brains. Would the sensory OT allow you to swap to a slightly different technique e.g. the autism massage therapy to see if it helped?

mumgoingcrazy · 11/06/2010 21:35

We've done the body brushing program 3 times now and have always been given the square surgical brushes with the sponge underneath. The OT has always given them to me and have worked ok for us so far. Have never had oval ones.

Hi Yanny

Is it anything like one of these?

[http://www.therapyshoppe.com/therapy/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=7&products_id=2004&s ort=20a&page=1] It is an american site though. I have come across a few references to an oval brush being the best for this e.g. here [http://www.developmentaldelay.net/page.cfm/13]

There is also this? [http://sensorystuff.co.za/component/page,shop.product_details/flypage,shop.flypage/product_id,22/ca tegoryid,7/manufacturerid,0/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,35/] but is South African?

And also found this comment on a site - "Double-Sided Oval Surgical Scrub Brushes ? the best brushes we have found to use with the Wilbarger Protocol. THIS SHOULD BE RECOMMENDED BY AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST FOR A CHILD WITH SPECIFIC SENSORY NEEDS. Pocket Full of Therapy,1-800-736-8124." The site referred to is here: [http://shoponline.pfot.com/cgi-sys/cgiwrap/pfot/sc/productsearch.cgi?storeid=*1270fdb65ed10b6f9c502 7]

I haven't tried to buy any of them (yet), but have been reading around since you posted about trying the brushing!

Don't know if any of these are any use? All the UK sites seem to be the rectangular ones with the sponge side.

If any work out, or you find another source do post.

Ooops, will try again, did the links wrong!

I hope this is better - they are horrible long addresses!

Arrgh! I give up! Well the first link worked. For the others try the main pages and search for brush!

Our OT gave us the 'therapressure' brush from the above link, its the oval one (second row, far left), my daughter loves it now, will even take it on bare skin and sometimes uses it herself. I think my dd's old OT (Sensory Smart Child in Walton on Thames) sell them for £5. It might be worth ringing them to see if they could sell you one if that is indeed the one you were after.

yanny · 12/06/2010 14:17

Thanks everyone

Lou I might be wrong but I don't think the oval brushes are used as scrub brushes but they were supplied by a surgical supplies company and are called scrub brushes.

Mumgoing crazy the square ones with sponge underneath didn't work for us, I find they dont allow as deep pressure as the oval ones. After testing one for the OT and then brushing the OT so she could feel the pressure (the things we have to do!) she agreed they are too soft to give enough pressure. Maybe you get firmer ones though.

Amber I haven't heard of autism massage therapy, can you tell me a bit more about it?

Mel thanks for the links (how are you btw!)I emailed these two TherapyShoppe and PocketFullOfTherapy

Waiting to hear back from them, fingers crossed they are the same!

Bubble will post back and let you know if these are any good

Eloise which link? Is it the proper Wilbarger brush?

Thanks again everyone
