Hi, I know from our teaching DC to stick out thier tongue thread that some people on here have DCs who go to language units so I wondered if anyone would be willing to share with me what sort of needs these places are good for and what the chances of going into one then into the mainstream one are?

DDis 3.9 and has various medical issues including a life threatening condition which shouldnt affect her development but could have caused delays in terms of lots of hospital, feeling unwell etc and also gue ear so is a bit complicated but it is looking more and more as if her s and l delay is not just gong to resolve itself and she is confusing even me in that she sometimes seems to have good understanding of things but then I think she is just copying others. Anyway, assuming her understanding is age appropriate, how likely is it she would get into a language unit?

There is a while to go as she is a september baby but the thought of her going into school as things are terrifies me, she has already come home twice with bite marks from playgrop and the staff havent realised because dd wouldnt be able to say what happened.

Ican is around the £1500 mark you get 2 full days in the school indepth report from speech therapist teacher and ep , they do have a bursary available to help

Worth every penny though Hertfordshire who are not exactly well known for their statement record took on board everyone of their recommendation knew not leg to stand on

and ds will be going to unit even with receptive delay as well

Used2bthin Im not sure what to say either no child has asked dd why she cant talk yet but sometimes they do look at her a bit funny, not sure if any child has asked at nursery as im not there. I love it when we are out at the shops and someone asks her something and they only need a yes or no because she can say yeah really well they think she can talk Im feeling better today as went to a charity football thing today and they had a stall there for autism and dyspraxia got talking to the lady and she said theres a group meets once a month and they can help me with the statement. She has 4 dc with asd so I think I have it easy now! Ican does sound good but didnt realise it was so expensive, think I will give them a ring though as no one has done a full development assesment on dd.

You may actually want to consider applying personally for the Statement rather than letting the preschool do it. Such places can sit on applications for ages, if you personally apply then at least you know its been done then.

In this area a stay of 1-2 years seems to happen within language units before being returned to mainstream school (with statement still in place).

IPSEA have model letters you can use:-

Doughnut ask them about help with costs and I would second about applying for a statement yourself

dounutbrain · 14/06/2010 20:19

Thanks for that roundthebend will do. Statement is started should be finished by end of August hopefully. Have you heard of CAMHS met somebody today and they said to look them up.

Ah get well soon

roundthebend4 · 14/06/2010 21:22

Yes but not bothered as ds dies nit really have any challenging behaviour or asd traits and the only social issues he has are centred around his communication

dounutbrain · 14/06/2010 21:41

Yes I looked it up after I asked you, and it doesnt look like we would need that either dont know why she said it now bit puzzled.Dd hasnt those things either our main concern is communication too.Oh well it was only someone I got speaking to at a play park today and as usual having to explain to them that she has development delay and cant talk, think they were trying to be helpfull.
