Yipee!!! Ds loved it. He's already met the OT as she has made sure she has popped in during physio sessions to say hi, and done a home assessment, but yesterday she did her first session in combination with ds's physio. Ds was brilliant the whole time with both, and loved the finger painting most of all. So we are now getting a block of 6 lessons, to be fitted in with his phsyio every week, then she will check him again and see if he needs more. Am so pleased ,

Funnily enough -tried blopens and I couldn't do them! They were a cheap make- worked once then not again- although they needed quite a lot of puff anyway.

I've tried various whistles and stuff. He doesn't really know what football is, but I did try a big Thomas train driver whistle. He just doesn't "get" it iykwim. Or maybe he can't do it. I don't know- this is where a speech therapist would be useful. dream dream dream dream.

Thanks for all these ideas though!

have you tried to feathers yet?? so if I keep repeating myself repeating myself

eidsvold · 19/07/2003 19:47

oh to swap your son for my dd - she is not even one and knows what football is!! The minute it is on TV she is dead quiet and focused on the tv not making a sound.... switch the channel and she protests!! Am sure her dad put her up to it!!

fio2 · 19/07/2003 22:09

my dd is like that about the footie eidsvold even when she was in the womb, but ds hes even worse-right pair of hooligans they areSmile

well we saw OT yesterday and she was lovely, said some very positive things about ds.

But....she also said he may be delayed in potty training as 'children with hemiplegia often don't have the sensation that their bladder if full'

Now, this is a new one on me - so i wondered what any of you have been told. It's important to be aware here that ds is doing so well now with mobility that , at the moment, no statement is necessary, and also that he's not even 3 til October. How worried should i be girls?

fio2 · 25/07/2003 07:46

I wouldnt be too concerned yet. If hes not 3 until october hes still got loads of time. What the OT said may be true, but if he is making good physical progress it seems unlikely to me that he will have lack of feeling in his bladder. Do what you feel is right MABS. My dd is 3 1/2 and we have finally started getting somewhere with her potty training, although we were also told not to expect too much. She has left side weakness too (not diagnosed as hemiplegic though) and she has good bladder control. I actually thought the reason for delay in potty training was more to do with physically having difficulties to sit on a potty more than bladder control.

I always think they no more have a crystal ball than we do mabs!! Ds1 stil isn't potty trained (hes 4 now). He has all the physical sensations and is dry at night, just can't get the order right in the day (wees then tells me). However I know another little boy who is roughly as autistic as ds1 iyswim and he was potty trained at just 2! I also have a friend who was told her daughter would never say more than 3 words (now talks in sentences). Your ds may be later, he may not- but the OT certainly doesn't know!

MABS · 25/07/2003 08:27

many thanks for your wise words. I too thought the 'problem' for him was the getting on/off the potty mobility issues. I won't panic just yet then.....

On the subject of pottys MABS I have found the easiest one for my dd is a 'first years' one. Its more like a chair, (and it can convert to a toilet seat and step)and it has handles either side. The handles make it so much easier for her to lower herself down and with it being higher off the ground it is not so far to sit down. Just thought that might be helpfulSmile

Didn't think I'd ever be posting on this! Had a letter this morning. We're going to get an OT assessment on 1 October. I think someone in the LEA has pulled some strings as we've only been waiting a year and a half. At the last meeting one of the bigwigs said she would chase it up (the school have also been moaning about him not being assessed).
