Riordan will start in a speech and language unit in September which will meet his main needs of speech, this is named in his statement .

The unit is obviously and fairly concerned as of yet no Ot in statement though it does list gross and fine motor controll in part 2.

I am aiming to get ot input on to statement have filed for tribunal and seeking indepnedant advice Im hoping for daily ot program and half termly input from ot .School are concerend about the amount of extra adult time

Riordan will need above the speech classifaction.Toileting , cutting up of food, moblity Ot writing etc with the inablity to write being a educational need rather than health needs

My question do any of you have children in a unit that have addtional needs above and beyond the clasifcation and can the unit apply for addtional money to allow for the extra lsa time he will require or do they have to meet time and costs from the budget of placement because have feeling if this is the case that within a year they will be calling placement review

I do. Dd3 is in a hearing impairment base, she has multiple other needs on top. On top of her base place she has a full time 1:1 (nursery) who is funded separately. The school had to go back to panel for extra funding and this was agreed.

thank you

Was this before the unit was named on the statement ? or after as feeling once Riordan starts school are going realise theres a lot more help needed than it appears from the statement.

He has no challenging behaviour or attention problems its all centered around his Pd and his speech will already be hard as he will be one of the youngest going into Year 1 and has had no formal schooling since January due to moving.Though is at a very good sn nursery

this was after the unit was named but before she started officially, her statement was issued just after easter last year. She started nursery officially last september but had done some settling in sessions from june last year, this was with support from the sensory impairment service which I think is when they realised she would not be straight forward. By september they had employed a ta to work with her. She also has no challenging behaviour, attention however, is a whole other thing current target is to remain focussed at an adult led activity for 3 minutes. Oh and no recognisable language either.

Thank you this is what im hoping, can happen before September though aware that this might well go all the way to tribunal to get Ot qunatified and qualified .Ds will be going into year 1 unable to hold a pen to even write pretty big impace on education without the language disorders

Ah not sure if ds will get any settling in sessions lol be intresting to see if he does becuase Lea have played down his ot needs and pd ,but i was not putting the school straight till after it was in black and white .

Have had conversation with them today and know they have big concerns on how there going to meet /fund his addtional needs

I asked outright if dd3 could do the settling in sessions and thankfully the sensory impairment service had a support worker with some free sessions, I think it benefited dd3 and the school in the end.

we didn't manage to pin physio and ot down to more than "regular" visits with a written programme to be carried out by school. But this isn't her major area of need so wasn't such a big thing for us. Ot here is like hens teeth, they won't even keep you on their list, you get an assessment and report with recommendations and signed off. When you need a knew report you have to be referred again, you do get the same ot presuming they are still there but the whole thing is a joke.

ty .

Im not so worried about physio as in his case its mainly ahealth needs .

Yes ds main need is his s&l but ot will be important education wise .

Will contact the school see if ds can get some sessions before hand might not be so easy as the unit is a hr away .Ds will be Y1

yes, yr1 is a different set up isn't it but always worth a try if you think it would be of benefit. It was easier for me as I already had 2 children at the school, although not in the base, it meant I knew some of the teachers before hand. I saw your other thread, hope the appeal goes well for you. It seems daft that you have ot specified in one area but move and all of a sudden it's deemed not necessary

Daft thing is they have wrote in part 2 like somehow he will be able to do one day all of a suddern

i also work in a deaf unit, and children who have additional needs have additional support to meet those needs. i'm in scotland though, and children with different agencies involved have a co-ordinated support plan to ensure that all agencies are working together.

your ds's unit should be working together with all the agencies involved with your ds and your local authority should meet the cost of that. i don't see how they can argue otherwise.

good luck with the trubunal.
