other than ASD is there any other discorders that cause limited and inconsistant eye contact? Its a comment we get often with DD2 and some days im sure its likely to be an ASD dx but then other days i think not a chance in hell!

Well I'm dyspraxic and find making eye contact difficult and very uncomfortable, particuarly with strangers.

My late husband who was trait-y but would never have merited DX had terrible eye contact - our son who's very definitely ASD has better eye contact than he did.

My ds has brilliant eye contact. Not only that but he searches for your eyes to clarify things he is trying to understand, even with friendly strangers.

He was assessed as 'severe' on the CARS.

I suppose you need to see these things as a 'side effect' rather than a guarantee. It doesn't affect everyone in the same way.

Ds has visual tracking difficulties and ASD. His eye contact is inconsistent, it can be good at first, then it seems to deteriorate during exchange. Whether this is due to tracking difficulties or ASD or both, i dont know.

Someone else with Dyspraxia here, I'm a bit funny with eye contact, I always got told off for staring as a child as I couldn't judge how much looking is appropriate. But I've also been told off for not standing close enough to other people or for staring at their chin when talking. I don't like optician's appointments as continued eye contact makes me feel weird (like someone who looks into your eyes ALL the time when talking or stands very close to you and looks into your eyes).

I don't like eye contact. I always look at a person's mouth. Not on the spectrum as far as I know- I score about 27 on those questionnaires. DS2 who has AS can do eye contact quite well. Not sure what that means.

My ds (3.10yrs) eye contact is what what it appears. You would probably be convinced his eye contact is good, but he is not "seeing" iykwim, the paed commented on this.

He has global developmental delay and characteristics of ASD, not diagnosed yet though.
