A speech and language question (ASD)

Hello my lovelies!

DS1 is back having SALT again after only 37289789257 phone calls and a a tiny wee bit of stress.

He has a new therapist who has said that she can only deal with those parts of his speech delay that are not ASD related. and also that his speech is delayed but also has "disordered features."

I am a little, OK, a LOT confused, as since I first started badgering people (when he was not quite 2) about his speech, I have been told it's "just" a delay and he will catch up. Now he has an ASD dx, suddenly he also has a speech disorder? I don't understand who will help us with the parts of his speech that are ASD related (and how do they flaming well tell, although I'm guessing it's the Wh questions.)

Any wisdom for us?

"she can only deal with those parts of his speech delay that are not ASD related"

may I be the first to say that that is an insane remark?

BigWeeHag · 31/05/2010 16:45

Yes, I did think that at the time. I genuinely cannot understand firstly how they can tell, and secondly, what difference it makes!

PMSL at your OP. Tell her you want someone who 'can' deal with the bits that are ASD related. Idiot!

ThickyStarlightTrollGirl · 31/05/2010 17:51

Write write write. You'll need evidence of this nonsense to badger them with in 6 months time when you frighten them into paying for a asd private slt.

Just write to clarify what she said. You don't even have to play dumb, you can ask her genuinely wtf she is going on about?

ThickyStarlight
Whats with the name change

ThickyStarlightTrollGirl · 31/05/2010 17:57

Someone didn't like me and called me it on another thread.

I thought it was funny though really!

waitingforgodot · 31/05/2010 18:02

EH?
That is quite cheeky but a wee bit funny.
Not on SN boards I hope.

ThickyStarlightTrollGirl · 31/05/2010 18:06

No, not here! Twas a silly bint on the main board on the walking to school thread.

waitingforgodot · 31/05/2010 18:11

The main board always ends in tears.
Apologies for the hijack Bigweehag.
As you were ladies...

BigWeeHag · 31/05/2010 18:16

LOL, no worries. Glad it's not just me that thinks and bollocks.

Suppose I shall get writing then.

Sorry, am PMSL at the salt "only dealing with the stuff that's not ASD". This is a CHILD, not a collection of diagnoses.

waitingforgodot · 31/05/2010 18:20

It sounds like a fob off if you ask me. I wonder how she can distinguish the speech delay that is ASD related.

Does anyone know what is the difference between delay and disorder? Not coming up with much on google. x

OP posts:
waitingforgodot · 31/05/2010 20:12

I would guess a delay rectifies itself eventually but a disorder may be more deep rooted?
Just a guess though

Yes, I think so.

He hasn't progressed in the "normal" way, that is why I was worried from about 18 months! Child thought he was speaking, but only used 2 sounds.

So, 3 1/2 years later they finally notice. Jolly good. Not really annoying at all.

ARGH.

Poor little bloke. He's got so much to say, and most people don't have the time or patience to listen.

Thanks guys.

I asked a bunch of SLTs and their consensus was that all children with ASD's have a speach disorder. Delay is when it is developing normally but behind. It can catch up. Disorder is when it is more complicated and not even, so being able to talk, but not understand that the person who you are talking to is bored out of their mind is a speech disorder (or was it language disorder?). Hmmmmm!

I'll ask again!

yeah justa they said that too. If they still have a delay at age 5, it is a disorder!

LOL, - how very precise and scientific - not!

Oh yeah, some silly bint on another thread called me this so I thought if the hat fits......

BigWeeHag · 31/05/2010 20:54

His pronunciation is about 3 million per cent better than this time last year, when even I had a 50% success rate of understanding. He is missing th, h, l, p, k, s and f as medials, g, r uses stopping and voicing, and yeah, doesn't get it when people either lose interest or don't understand - either just keeps talking or screams at them.

That all sounds horrible. He isn't! Honestly. It's bad enough that the initial paed we saw claimed he was "babbling jargon." He bloody well was not, he was imparting loads of information, not his fault she wasn't listening properly!

What was the thread, Starlight, sounds like a fun one?
