THe child development team gave us a diagnosis of ASD last week. dd is 3 (nearly 4) I have a huge mound of paperwork which seems completely irrelevant. The assessments they gave me don't sound like dd at all. I'm not sure about the diagnosis at all but I don't know what to do next.

or am I just in denial?

and does it even matter if they label her?

Did you raise your concerns with the team?

Perhaps write to them, telling them your concerns and asking them to explain?

she's very verbal but defiant, right? very very good or horrid?

What did they say about her? Do they think she's got trouble "reading the signals" of what other people do?

I do agree with Starlight's last sentence because ASD is, as far as I can work out, supposed to be about your senses/processing being a bit (or very) unbalanced. leading to a difference in how you experience the world and therefore, usually, anxiety.

But I also think scepticism is healthy.
There's accepting the label and there's accepting the label. You might choose to go with it so long as it opens doors to more support (do you agree she needs more support?). You don't have to accept it internally (they change its meaning fairly regularly anyway so I wouldn't treat any of it as gospel).
