Dd1's feet, do they look odd?

Dd1's feet have always turned inwards and she has problems with low muscle tone, whilst we were out and dd1 was running around in canvas shoes dd's feet looked so bad that dh noticed (dh doesn't usually spot these things). I have taken some photo's of her feet but they don't seem to look too bad without shoes on, please can you take a look and see if you think it is noticeable?

Just putting pic on profile.

You can ask to see a podiatrist if you are worried. In our area you can self refer and go to a drop in.Don't know what it is like elsewhere.

Marne · 23/05/2010 18:48

Thans imahappycamper- i took her sister to have her feet looked at last month as they turned inwards, i think dd's are worse as her whole foot turns in and it looks like she's almost walking on her ankle bone.

My DD's used to look like that, she was given some insoles by the physiotherapist and is now fine, doesn't need them any more.

mintyfresh · 23/05/2010 19:57

They don't look very odd to me - quite similar to DD's feet in fact and she doesn't yet have any arches in her feet. She looks very unstable walking in shoes like Crocs. She also has low muscle tone (trunk) and hypermobility in hips, knees, ankles etc.

Her physio hasn't commented on her feet yet just told me to always buy fitted shoes with ankle support...

ouryve · 23/05/2010 20:15

DS2's feet look a lot like that. They look worse when he's walking, since he splays his toes upwards for stability.

sugarcandymountain · 23/05/2010 20:51

I can see the turning in on her right foot. Is that her in the turquoise T shirt as well? It looks noticable, but not severe. Is there uneven wear on her shoes? I'm sure it's something that could be dealt with using insoles rather than any more specialist therapy.

Marne · 23/05/2010 20:56

Yes Sugar, she's the one in the terquoise T-shirt, that photo was from last year, i think her feet have got worse, she walks better in ankle boots but wont wear them in the summer, there is uneven wear on her shoes. We are trying to get OT involved for her low muscle tone, do you think they will look at her feet? or should i take her to the GP?

sugarcandymountain · 23/05/2010 21:26

I'm sure it's worth taking her to the GP to flag it up as a separate issue. I think if you left it to the OT, it might get a bit lost amongst the problems with low muscle tone as well?

they don't look tooooo bad... is she seeing a physio as well, marne? either the physio or the ot should be able to refer to the orthotist if necessary.

i'm fannying around trying to find supportive sandals at the mo. dd2 has outgrown her piedros and looks plain daft wearing clonky boots with summer stuff. when she was teeny i could get really cute supportive sandals from indie shoe shops, now she's bigger it's a nightmare.

mind you, the orthotist did say that once they hit ten or so they just refuse to wear supports in any case until they get past the fashion ideal and realise they are a lot more comfortable and reduce pain... some cute support boots for girls, but the sandals leave a lot to be desired.

bubble2bubble · 24/05/2010 11:26

Looks very like DD1's feet.
A chiropractor has helped a lot and it's much less obvious now as long as she's wearing decent shoes. It is to do with posture & muscle tone. The theory is that as her legs get stronger with more excerise it will improve more. Also has no arches & VERY narrow feet.
DD is much happier/walks much better in ankle boots or really chunky shoes. Got her some baby Timberlands recently which she loves & she walks really well in them - not exactly what you want in a heatwave sadly

Marne · 24/05/2010 12:47

She's not seeing physio, just waiting for OT.

Her feet don't seen to grow either, she's only gone up 1 size in 2 years . It is hard to find supportive summer shoes.

Agreeing about the supportive summer shoes. DS2 is ending up barefoot when he's in his buggy or the car - he has a habit of stripping off as much as possible when he's even a bit warm, anyhow.

Oh, fancy that - right on cue, he takes his trousers off. Maybe my non-verbal 4 year old can actually read !

Marne · 24/05/2010 16:30

I did get dd2 some good supportive sandals in Tesco a few weeks back but the style is too wide for dd1's narrow feet.

maybe ask gp for referral to orthotist then - they can have a check and see if they need some support now, or just baseline check and see you again in 3/6 months to see if they are getting worse/ better?

piedro still do sandals i think, but they aren't great. going to have to start googling i think.

NickOfTime · 24/05/2010 16:47

dd2 also has v narrow feet - clarks refuse to sell anything to us, so we've been using a lovely indie shop that can generally find something! unfortunately we've moved to the middle of nowhere, and the poor child is wandering round is walking shoes until i work out where to go from here

SanctiMoanyArse · 24/05/2010 16:55

My feet also like that- as a child I wore through shoes every fortnight; turned out after I sustained bad back damage (couldn't walk more than a few yerads for 3 months in my twenties) that my legs are different lengths.

The boys all have similar feet though and walk funny, wearing shoes very unevenly. My own opinion is that it should be dealt with, due to what happened to me (even now without an insole I end up with a stick) but getting someone to listen amongst the otehr stuff easier said than done

SanctiMoanyArse · 24/05/2010 16:56

(we don't have narrow feet though- ds4 has an I fitting- Clarks turned us away and someone on MN gave us some wide shoes but even they graze him, and crocs too narrow as well!)

pinkiepunksmummy · 24/05/2010 18:32

My DC's feet are all like that too...DS and DD1 have insoles and Piedro's (Hypermobility Syndrome and low muscle tone) and DD2 has just been prescribed insoles too (hypermoblity).

When their feet were checked by orthotiost/paed, they took particular notice of their lack of arches and the view of the back of their feet. Instead of having a nice straight heel bone, it curves inwards. None of them are allowed to wear clogs/flip flops/sandals/ballet pumps/etc. DS and DD1 walk so much better in their boots that it is worthwhile. They all have very narrow feet, and the Piedro's are the first footwear to have ever fitted properly....but unfortunately, poor DD1 is having to wear her old battered navy blue boots with her summer dresses while she waits for her new white glitzy ones to arrive!

deepbreath · 24/05/2010 19:52

My dd's 7, her feet are awful - her feet are very narrow and she is walking on the inside of her ankle bones. She is extremely hypermobile and has low muscle tone due to her having Marfan Syndrome.

If you leave your dd's feet, they may get worse. Your G.P. should be able to refer your dd to an Orthotist for assessment. Piedro's or insoles are usually the things that they try first. Dd now has DAFO's and Piedro's, and they are at a loss as to what to try next.

Don't wait around to see an O.T. as you might have a very long wait IME!

My son's feet do this as has no arches. Also low muscle tone and hypermobile joints. Had Piedros and insoles for a couple of years and now just insoles (he's 6). Orthotist says will probably need insoles at least until teens but possibly always. His feet also turn in more markedly at times and Orthotist says this is when he is going through a growth spurt. Then they straighten out again for a while. I would ask for a referal to Orthotics. We were refered by physio but as you're not seeing one I'd try GP for a referal. Our OT took 8 months for initial appointment and can be longer so wouldn't wait for that.
