ASD related - when did your HFA child stop using a buggy?

Looking for advice/ stories of what worked for you and yours, really.

DS1 is coming out of nursery ready to collapse into tears and hysteria. Using a buggy helps a bit with this, if only so that I can get him out of the building and home safely! It gives him a "safe" place, I@ suppose. He has outgrown our Nipper, so I am looking at MB terrain doubles.

He is nearly 5 though, and obviously I don't want him to be using a buggy any more.

The buggy board is no good as he falls asleep on it and falls off. He is about 19kg.

TIA for replies xx

Dd2 (4.3) is still in a buggy, she is happy to walk but tends to run off or roll around on the floor (meltdown) if she see's something she wants.

Dd1 is 6 (AS) and i often have to turf dd2 out of the buggy on the way home from school because dd1 can't walk any further.

We have just got a MaClaren Major but i don't like using it (just me being stupid and hating people staring at us), i wish i could afford a mountain buggy as they look great. I mainly use a old Maclaren Quest which i picked up at a boot sale for 5 pounds .

The ones I am looking at are going for about £40 on ebay!

Go for it BigweeHag, my maC Major was 100.00 on e-bay, i wish i had bought a mountain buggy instead .

From the sounds of things I would definitely go with buying another buggy. It sounds as though he still really needs one.

My two were younger when they stopped using theirs but circumstances were completely different to yours. Ds2 was so hyper active that he hated being in his at all. Ds1 used his until 3+ as he used to tire easily, but was ready then to give it up. It doesn't sound as your ds1 has reached that point yet so I'd forget about his age and start hunting down an e-bay bargain.

DS is five and has a maclaren major, not sure of his weight and height but he is big for his age, in age 7-8 or 8-9 clothes, he would probably snap a regular umbrella buggy.

We get stares but today I was reminded why the stares are worth it when we went into town with him on his scooter rather than with the major buggy. Lets just say it'll be a long time until I am loopy enough to try that again!

We got ours from wheelchair services they were great.

Same as LifeofRiley. My 6 year old still gets in the buggy sometimes (old clapped out mountain buggy) and we do get stares.

But we get worse stares if I'm picking him off the path and shouting at him to walk! Its a lifesaver. Bugger the judgemental stares.
