Hello

My little boy was diagnosed as on the autistic spectrum last month. We are having our 1st meeting with his teacher and the senco. Someone from parent partnership is coming with us but I get the feeling she plays a pretty passive role. No idea what we should ask - I'd like to follow some form of agenda but haven't a clue what it should include. He is five, in reception - the school have a reputation for being unsympathic towards SEN. My little boy, has issues with concentration, playing with friends and gets a little silly.

They have called us twice 'to come and get him' because of minor incidents - spitting! and really made me feel like it was my fault. They reduced me to tears once!

Any ideas of what I should ask would be really appreciated.

Thanks M x

Question one - are there any better schools in your area?

Explain his difficulties as you see them and ask them what plans they have to help him in terms of each one. Leave lots of expectant silences for them to fill.

What support is available specifically for him during playtimes?

What reward systems will they use with him?

How many hours a week TA support will he get to help with his concentration skills?

How will they make sure that the staff member who supports him fully understands his needs?

How often will they be completing and reviewing IEPs, in cooperation with you of course?

How will the ensure that all adults in the school are aware of his needs and know to use clear, direct language.

I'll keep thinking.
