Anyone with school aged child with hearing aids?

My ds(4) is a hearing aid wearer. He's desperate to get them in by himself but after 3months of every morning trying to help him he's just not managing it at all. We can't even get it so that he gets the mould into the ear but not tucked in at the top iykwim. He's really anxious that if he can't do it by the time he starts school in September then he won't be able to hear if they fall out if he takes his jumper off (which happens a lot as he has a big head). I keep telling him that the teacher will be shown how to do it but he's adament that he needs to be able to do it.

So any tips? We're standing in front of the mirror, I'm trying to guide his hands.

Or is he too young (he's only just turned 4 and fine motor skills are average for his age)?

Thanks.

My dd3 has just turned 4 and wears aids, although she has additional needs so we're not at that stage yet. Have you tried a bit of vaseline on the mould so it will go in a little easier? Does he understand which bit of the mould goes where, could he try putting it in your ear so he can see easily where each bit goes? Have you considered huggies for him so they stand a better chance of staying in place or toupe tape? As he's so enthusiastic at the moment it would be a shame to not keep trying

Do you think the mirror might be confusing him?

rebl · 19/05/2010 16:40

pippop1 Hadn't thought that but it might be. Mirrors are confusing I guess when you're trying to do something fiddly.

bigcar We use otafirm so it slips in easier. He knows the mould goes in his ear but he doesn't seem to understand that there is a right way up and wrong way up. We haven't tried huggies for a while, he didn't get on with them but we could give them a go again. He really does have a big head though!

ds had got the hang of it more or less by the time he started school. tucking the mould in at the top and then putting the ear bit in seems easier, IYSWIM? then the aid part just flips over the ear.

maybe take the hearing aid off the mould and just let him play around with the mould for a bit?

MayorNaze Thank you for that suggestion of tucking the mould in at the top 1st. That would result in the mould orientating in the right direction automatically i guess. I'll give that a go tomorrow. He can flip the aid part over his ear, he's been doing that for a while now.
