Can anyone recommend good autism/dyspraxia books for parents?

Hi,
My son has a number of spectrum behaviours and I have noticed he shows elements of dyspraxia - he has another major neurological condition which I believe causes his behaviours, but there are no books on it related to that so I am looking to find some good books for parents on Autism and Dyspraxia so I can pick through and find the bits relevant to him.

Has anyone got any recommendations? I'm looking to see how I as a parent can help him, but an all round understanding wouldn't go amiss.

Thank you

Hey, My son has AS and i found it hard to find it difficult to find books that dealt with that not jus "autism" there is a great book called the curious incident of the dog in the middle of the night that is written by a man who has As and other symtoms of ASD. it goes into how he see's the world.

hope this helps

Thanks lil steel - read that years ago though.

I'm not actually looking for a book that deals with both - one or the other would be very helpful. Just something that people have experience of reading so I'm not barking up the wrong tree.

Thank you though

Madeleine Portwood - Developmental Dyspraxia after someone here recommended to me a while back
Very easy to read - lists symptoms to look for at different ages, case studies etc

Thanks bubble - will have a look at that

"I'm looking to see how I as a parent can help him"

in that case, the book you need for the ASD side of things is the very expensive but superb "More than Words" published by Hanen, distributed through Winslow, sometimes available around the £30 mark from waterstones.com

A superb book on helping a child use their visual learning abilities is Linda Hodgson's "Visual Strategies for Improving Communication" - very much based in the real world.

I second more than words.
I am currently reading "ten things your child with autism wishes you knew" or something like that (too lazy to go upstairs and check the title!)
Thats quite a simple, short book and keeps things in perspective.
I also found "autism for dummies" quite a good book

MotherJack,
I meant to say that Cerebra have a library with a good range of SN books for lending.

MotherJack · 20/05/2010 11:55

Thanks Lingle and Waitingforgodot.

Last night I ordered Developmental Dyspraxia by Madeleine Portwood and Understanding and Working With the Spectrum of Autism by Wendy Lawson.

More than Words is currently out of stock, but I do have an info pack from Cerebra so I will go and have a look through that now to see if I can see anything about the library and look at the other books suggested. Thank you!
