Not sure what is going on with DS2

DS2 (4) isn't sleeping very well lately, despite taking slow release meltonin before bed. Usually he takes it half an hour before bed at 7pm and he goes to sleep fine, sleeps through til 7am. Lately he is still wide awake at 9pm, getting up and down with different excuses, hungry, thirsty, tired, feels sick.....Next morning he is really tired and won't get out of bed.

At school as well, he keeps saying he feels poorly, gagging as if he is going to be sick, saying he is tired, so school calls me to collect him as they are worried about him. I've told them about his not sleeping properly, and that he is tired because of it, but they insist he needs to come home. Fair enough as he just lies down and watches a dvd to relax. Later on in the day he is up and down, stimming a lot, which is worrying for me.

Now I know children with autism are not meant to to lie, or to make things up, so I'm not entirely sure if he is just acting on it and knows he will be sent home.

His 1:1 has said that he is stimming a bit more than usual from dinner time onwards, getting off his chair and standing behind it, rocking from one foot to another staring into space .

I've no idea what is going on with him. I'm not even sure if I should make an appointment with his paed as dont want to waste his time. Nothing has changed at school or at home.

Any ideas? Could he be ill with somthing else and I'm not noticing? Is it usual for a slight regression or is he getti too much stimulation with all the learning at school?

Is he eating anything new in his diet?

5inthebed · 18/05/2010 19:42

Not that I know of. He is gettig worse with his eating if anything. The range of foods he is eating is getting smaller. Thats another thing I should have mentioned!

Why is it so stressful!

I decided to put him to bed at 6 tonight after his tablet, and he was asleep by 7 .

Just when you mentioned the stimming, my DS used to stim like mad after eating bread(yeast?)
If he is a fussy beggar, its hard. Dont really have any advice but someone else will have some input I'm sure. Hope he sleeps well tonight

No he is fine with bread, has a jam sandwich every day .

I'm just wondering if he is anxious about DS1s birthday, which is on Thursday. No reason why he should be though.

Thanks for trying

Maybe it is the birthday as its something out of his routine?

MoneyNoPockets · 18/05/2010 20:59

fingers crossed he sleeps thru tonight, maybe the birthday and being a bit tireder has = hard to get to sleep?

5inthebed · 19/05/2010 11:44

Well he slept through til half 6! So that was good. Still saying he is tired though, and I'm just waiting for the inevitable call from school saying to o collect him.

I'm hoping it is the birthday as it is tomorrow so will be back to normality

fingers crossed!

If he's getting fussier than normal with his eating, could he be missing something - e.g. bit anaemic?
Could be he's about to come down with a virus?

5inthebed · 19/05/2010 13:22

Virus, possibly. He did have a fever last week where he went bright red and rashy, and as sent home from school. A bit of calpol and a good sleep and he was fine otherwise though.

Do you think I should make an appointment with the paed to discuss it if it doesn't improve after DS1s birthday?
