Cognitive Testing

Just wondered what cognitive testing is and what it involves. My DD is 10.

DD is still waiting on appt with camhs.

We have a fab sensory OT who contacted me to say she spoke with DD's Paed last week and both agreed cognitive test would be beneficial. Already have Ot report (1st percentile for Movement ABC), currently under assessment with SALT (due a multi meeting at school next month after SALT have finished assessing). Last month I completed scales for ADHD/ADD as did the teacher. Seems Paed is testing and ruling out as we go along.

And while I'm here (although I've posted this question before) anyone have any experience with non verbal learning disorder / disability (NVLD)? It has been quietly suggested to Paed in early SALT report. I got the same report without the NVLD info.

Any advice/insight welcome

How did you find out about the NVLD then?

Cognitive testing is usually done to assess whether there is a learning disability. It's supposed to be a kind of innate capability test.

See you can have severe SLT problems but still be very bright iyswim.

Thanks for replying

Found out about the suggestion of NVLd from Paed, for some reason SALt report for DD had included info on it for Paed but my (exact same) report didn't have the extra info included.I asked for a copy (symptoms very similar to Aspergers)

DD has no apparent speech probs, more comprehension issues and being able to articulate herslf. She struggles to make herself understood even though she knows some impressive words! Maths is just a complete nightmare too

Ds has had this as for long time was told he had global delay devlopment then MLD but had private ep report done and they did non verbal testing which proved in fact that ds is within normal limits for cognitive devlopment and that in some areas he is actually advanced that his diffcultes are caused by Pd and his s&l speech and processing
.For me it has meant that ds has been able get place in a speech unit.
And that they have had put more help in as before hand if ds struggled with something they exaused it by saying was LD rather than their teaching methods

My daughter has NVLD she has above average scores for language and is below the 1st percentile for numeracy/visual and spatial testing.

They use a tests which involve reading comprehension, picture tests, numeracy tests ect. Test takes about and hour. My daughter is also 10.

It is like Aspergers in regard to social and sensory areas but cognitively visual processing is significantly poorer than verbal skills which seem superficially OK but there is a tendency to get confused with the semantics of language and take things literally.

Thats really helpful, thanks for the replies.

Who does the test? Fingers crossed we're not going onto another waiting list that seemingly has no end!

yanny · 18/05/2010 18:33

Thanks, has already been observed by EP about a year ago, she was really good and didn't wait long to see her either. So not another long waiting list. Hooray

yanny · 18/05/2010 19:33

It was the EP that goes into school. I self referred. I had a quick look at ican, will have more time later. Thanks for that!
