very good point 2shoes.

2shoes · 16/05/2010 12:38

oh and I wasn't picking on the op of the ADOS thread.
if you are new to sn or your dc has something rare(or as I say are on a differnt path, it is all so confusing

Perhaps MN could offer us a box i
with a link to a glossarY? We can add to the glossary as we go along and then everyone will be in the know and we won't have to type it out every time.

pippop1 · 16/05/2010 14:27

That's a great idea. I don't know what ADOS is either.

missmarples · 16/05/2010 14:33

Just below the Mumstalk title is a link to acronyms (to the right of talk) - if you click on it it tells you them all.

eatyourveg · 16/05/2010 14:35

Doesn't tell you what ADOS is though

lou031205 · 16/05/2010 14:37

I agree 2shoes, if we all do it, it will make it even easier for lurkers looking for help too.

missmarples · 16/05/2010 14:40

Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule

i think

5inthebed · 16/05/2010 14:51

I think a SN acronym list would be very helpful, as half o them I don't even know. SHould we ask MNHQ?

2shoes · 16/05/2010 15:23

thing is it is a pain to have to go to the mn list and wade through, by the time you have (and some things like CP can mean 3 things) surely just to put it in one post wouldn't hurt)
ABA, ADOS.....no haven't got a clue

OP posts:
FuckingNinkyNonk · 16/05/2010 15:52

We can try 2shoes, but I expect we'll just slip unconsciously back into the acronym world accidently. I have tried to moderate my posts to take account of comments I have had in the past, and I'll keep trying, but there will constantly be new people too who forget or don't realise.

The funny thing is though, that if we were posting on the main board we'd be sure to spell it out I bet.

debs40 · 16/05/2010 15:57

Hi, that was my post. I completely understand your point but I suppose the post is explicitly asking for help from those who do know what an ADOS is and have been through it so I hadn't thought of trying to explain it to those who do not. Does that make sense? Will put full name down in future.

FuckingNinkyNonk · 16/05/2010 16:01

I didn't even know what it stood for anyway. Just some daft autism test that only says your child has autism if it is conducted on a day with an S in the name, and if it doesn't but they still want to dx your child with autism, they reshedule for a day that does.

I find myself googling alot of the terms used on this board i'd never heard of half of them before coming on MN. I only no that ADOS was something to do with autism.

2shoes · 16/05/2010 16:57

debs40 it wasn't a dig at you honest.
I don't know what ABA is either.
I will just not bother

FuckingNinkyNonk · 16/05/2010 17:13

2shoes, come on. I don't think anyone wants to make you feel excluded. In fact most of us (extraoplating from I) really value your contributions and want you here. I just don't know in a practical sense how it can be done with certainty without an acronym list. I can absolutely try to be mindful though, just can't see how it can be controlled for indefinately.

debs40 · 16/05/2010 17:48

2shoes...I know you weren't having a go and I really didn't mean to be exclusive. I think you have a point, I really do, and I will try and make sure I explain my posts so as not to exclude. You are very good at posting and sympathising on threads which means alot to us all.

Us auties, really do live in a nightmare alphabet world - DCD, SID, ASD, PDD, ADOS, ADI blah blah blah !!!

silverfrog · 16/05/2010 18:05

I htink it is definitely something we could all bear in mind.

I haven't a clue what half of them are, either! As usual, you only knowwhat they are if you have come across

5inthebed · 16/05/2010 18:19

Heck I don't even know what ADOS means, and DS2 has had one

2shoes · 16/05/2010 18:47

sorry didn't mean to sound so stroppy.
I just want to join in more

OP posts:
FuckingNinkyNonk · 16/05/2010 18:56

Well like I said, I'll try really hard, for you and for other posters, but please just ask if you don't understand. I have to sometimes too, and it IS annoying I agree, but it is never intended to be elite.

lou031205 · 16/05/2010 19:01

2shoes, I think we can all get a bit isolated with having a child with SN, so to feel isolated on a SN board smarts more than normal!

We can all make sure that we explain ourselves, I am sure.

FWIW, I think that we can all feel a bit marginalised. I read ASD threads and think "DD is like that but her Paed says she is not on the ASD spectrum", so I don't feel I can post. Someone else might look at Speech and Language threads and think "My child's speech is ok, but they still get frustrated with communication", and so on.

Actually, I know you need to protect your DD's dignity, but I love it when you talk about her in your threads, and you don't do it often. I always like getting a little bit more of a 'picture' of your DD. She sounds fab. So please do share your knowledge - you are about 11 years ahead of me. (Incidently my DD3's birthday is on your DD's birthday )

TotalChaos · 16/05/2010 19:15

good point 2shoes. btw I don't know what ADOS stands for - just know that it's meant to be a pretty good test for diagnosing ASD. As I understand it (others will know more/explain better) ABA is applied behaviour analysis - tends as I understand it to work on antecedent/behaviour/consequence - i.e. looking at behaviour in context to try and deal with behaviour/educational issues.

I agree with Lou - I am fine on pre-school language delay, but feel marginalised when it comes to ASD and statementing as for various reasons I haven't been down that path with DS, so can only post generalities.

ouryve · 16/05/2010 20:42

For what it's worth, even with 2 kids with ASD, I didn't know what ADOS actually stood for.

I've often joked that my kids have letters after their name, but it's getting to be more the case that DS2's swallowed a dictionary that my spellchecker's never even read.
