DS2 is 4.10 and was diagnosed with speech/communication delay when he was about 3.Since then he has had group sessions with SALT,which finished about 12mths ago.
He was referred to ENT and diagnosed with glue ear 12mths ago.The consultant decided this might have been what was coursing the speech delay because of hearing loss. After seeing the consultant 4 times it was then decided 3 weeks ago that DS hearing was fine.
Then i got a letter on saturday referring DS to the hearing impairment centre.(It was the consultant from ENT that referred DS)
Since DS started school last july his teacher and myself have been trying to sort SALT for him.(we moved house and school last may so no funding was in place for DS at new school).Anyway SALT visited DS yesterday at school. She rang me after and basically said she thought he has a problem with his hearing.
I have said before his hearing is worse when there is back ground noise of any kind. But if he is facing you 1 to 1 he is better.I feel like i'm going round in circles.I really don't know what to do for DS.
I did ask his teacher if i should apply for a statement but she said to wait till sept. But i feel like that is just putting things off.
Sorry its so long.

Had exactly the same problem with ds, i even started to learn sign language as was told he he had severe hearing difficulties. Failed developmental hearing test badly, was told this was responsible for his speech. Went to specialist centre and was told glue ear. This cleared up and was told his hearing is fine. I suspect Auditory processing disorder, but cant be tested until 7.

Had the same problem with his eyes, failed developmental eye test, suspected squint. Specialist dxed Brown Syndrome (lifelong condition) which has now cleared up! Fails eye tests, but doesnt need glasses. Had Irlen Syndrome test, didnt have it, but when tested for Irlen Syndrome picked up on severe visual tracking difficulties.

Apply for statutory assessment so they can establish the extent of his difficulties. School always seem to put parents off.

if you can afford it go private and get a second opion now dont wait. statements are hard to get, get indedpendant advice if you have enough reports for it now contact ipsea or pwp f you then think you can get one go for it! they are easier to get BEFORE they statrt school once they are in school it could take years of" lets just see how he goes" most paernet with a child with sen have to fight every inch just to get basic entilment for thier children LEA,s dont care.

Do not wait till blooming September, put your request in NOW. It can take 6 months to set such a document up.

If you're wondering what to write IPSEA have model letters you can use. You will need to write to the Chief Education Officer of your LEA and give them six weeks to reply (mark that date on your calendar).
