Hiya SGK, I know you are busy and hope you don't mind.......
I remember that your ds has just nearly completed year 7 and would be grateful if you could share some experiences of transition to secondary school for a child with cerebral palsy.

my dd is year 5 and we have just started the process(she is statemented already-but want to ensure it's A1 as we were very naive when she was little and were just grateful for a statement-so now know what we want on it-thanks to mn)

year 5 or 6
what outside agencies were involved?(that were specific to transition)already have ot and physio, sat and senco.

when did you receive statement for year 6? was it combined with year 7? or did you not get it until feb 14th of year 6

transport to school?

lunch time?

science labs seating?

practical lessons eg cookery/art/woodwork type lessons

pe?(sport as in team games)?

moving around in a busy corridor environment?

homework?

dd has a whhelchair but mainly walks in her own fashion

any other ideas or suggestions?

as I have done quite a lot of googling and can't seem to find much info?
(will consider producing a leaflet and donating to contact a family with info when we have reached the end of year 7)

Hope you don't mind me shouting out to you like this and hopefully if others read this thread they may be able to join in with helpful ideas too...

Many thanks,chatee

Hiya, can help with some of your questions but the ones about statements I don't know about as DS1 doesn't have one

year 5 or 6
what outside agencies were involved?(that were specific to transition)already have ot and physio, sat and senco.
We have an advicory teacher service here who ggave me some really good advice and support.

when did you receive statement for year 6? was it combined with year 7? or did you not get it until feb 14th of year 6
Cant help with that sorry, DD1 is in year 5 and statmented but going through the same thing atm ourselves

transport to school?
Ds1 has a taxi to and from school, the LEA pay for it as Ds1 has gone to his nearest approacite (sp?) school, and its over 3 miles

lunch time?
Ds1 has a lunch pass which allows him and a friend to leave 5 minutes early so Ds1 is first in the canteen and not in the crush
science labs seating?

practical lessons eg cookery/art/woodwork type lessons
Ds1 has a TA which helps him with this lessons. The school also have height adjustable tables so he isn't balanced on a stool

pe?(sport as in team games)?
Ds1 is banned (by physio) from doing contact sports, mainly because he is unsteady, but also he is tiny and would be seriuosly hurt. He does skills on the sidelines with the TA

moving around in a busy corridor environment?
Again he has a pass which allows him to leave 5 minutes early to avoid the crush

homework?
He does all the same homework, but he is allowed to use the computer for a lot of his written work

dd has a whhelchair but mainly walks in her own fashion
Ds1 mainly walks, he took his wheelchair in for the first term, but he didn't use it, he had to use it last month as he was in pain, but school are fine with that as the school is fully adapted

many thanks sparkly

your advisory teacher-what did they suggest that has really helped your ds?

height adjustable tables-ooh will look into that one.

don't really want to say too much personal stuff as think i would be easy identifiable but am beginning to stress(eek already!)
but still have concerns!

re your statement query:-

The Statement for secondary school will be rewritten by the LEA (with part 4 left blank for you to insert the name of the secondary school) prior to your DD attending there.

Re the statement you must ensure that Parts 2 and 3 are okay; these two parts are the most important bits of the whole statement.

This whole process re transition to secondary school really starts in Y5 because this is when the transitional review takes place. The Y6 annual review is more straight forward by comparison and I received DS's Y7 statement in good time.

chatee · 02/05/2010 11:20

attila,

we have had year 5 annual review(transition)and are wondering as to when we will receive statement for year 6?(as it was agreed to amend) and then when do we receive proposed statement for year 7 ?(again agreed to amend due to secondary)

so what actually happens in a year 6 review?
as ours would be scheduled before (feb 14th) which is the cut off date for statements for year 7?

sorry-so many questions and so little 'good' and impartial advice for this age group.

and thanks to mn i realise the importance of parts 2 and 3 but also need help with non educational(or should this be identified in part 2?) ie transport to school due to the nature of her disability

many thanks again for advice x
