I have found a couple of sites but they were either American or the writing that said 'I have autism' was tiny.

I need a bag I can flip around in emergencies that says something like 'what's your excuse'?

You know the ones I mean? I really don't want to label my son to all and sundry 24/7 so it would be just for during the meltdowns in public.

You can design your own as well. I've been thinking about doing something because I have had so many problems from the general public recently when ds1 is behaving well!

Magaly · 29/04/2010 10:27

can you link to it? i still can't find it!!!

loads of american stuff available.

I would design one myself here

I may do that actually

And they have some already made here

Some of those t-shirts are more scary than an insensitive member of the general public!
I used to make t-shirts for my ABA therapists that said "someone with Autism loves me", not the other way round iyswim.

lol Davros.

I may make a I have autism please be patient or something. If a bag then it might look as if I have autism .

Dunno, I still feel a but funny stuffing ds1 in a t-shirt. maybe a badge? We are getting a lot more problems from the general public now he's older. Mainly when he's not really doing anything.

I agree about putting DS in a "message" t-shirt as he doesn't know what it means and it seems like using him as a billboard! A bag is a good idea, maybe one with a message one side and just an awareness raising logo or something on the other.
I always wanted to get DS a t-shirt saying "she's not fat, she takes steroids" and one for me to say "he's not naughty, he's got autism" or something like that
I know what you mean about getting looks for normal ASD behaviour. DS likes to bunny hop, squeak and whoop. This is the behaviour I describe as "unusual", ha ha. It does no harm and I always interact with him a lot so most people realise when he's hugging (headlocking) me and I'm doing Makaton that there's something going on and they're usually at least understanding if not interested. But I do think you have to draw the line when the behaviour really is unacceptable, e.g. when he used to spit at everyone, argh! But a bit of mormal ASD behaviour, they can suck it up!

Autism Awareness UK is an ebay shop with a big range of that sort of thing. I got a bag and mugs that say "I (heart) someone with Aspergers" but they have loads of things like "Is my Autism showing?". They do badges, t shirts, bags etc for a variety of conditions. I just googled to make sure it is still there- didn't look at whole range.

imahappycamper · 29/04/2010 11:57

Had another look. The bags have the slogan on one side so you could easily turn them round. The p and p is free which is another plus. A lot of the punchier slogans are on T shirts, but the owner does ask for other suggestions.

Gigantaur · 29/04/2010 12:07

just had a look at that ebay page.

some of those slogans are fantastic. Ds is older now so we don't have as much of a need for them but i think i may have to get a bag or badge.

they are fantastic

He has autism on a bag might be good.

The complaints about ds1 have mainly been because of his noises he makes (which is loud, just little squeeky noises- odd but unobtrusive) or because he stands slightly in the wrong place in the queue. Goodness that makes people huff. He's usually wearing a PECS book so it should be obvious anyway- and if not from the way I am talking to him. I let him stand just in front of me so he can see the front of the queue- then he waits nicely. If he's behind people we get arms and legs everywhere and no nice waiting. But the hump people get. Ignorant gits. I might need a housebrick rather than a bag

Magaly · 29/04/2010 12:31

Davros< i agree, I wouldn't want the bag to carry a rude message. LIke what's your excuse for being weird!? That's kind of unnecessarily aggressive!

I do like the ones that say 'I'm not a faulty dog, I'm a cat'. BUT I don't think that is clear enough, not during a meltdown in the middle of tesco anyway!

"Is my Autism showing?"

That's perfect. It's not aggressive and it's not too sentimental. I'm not sure I want a bag that goes on about who loves whom...... why that bothers me I don't know!!!

WIth a bag, I could flip it over so that the writing shows WHEN I need to. And then keep the writing inside by my side the rest of the time. that's the plan.

OK going to design/order a bag now.

I saw one years ago on a "mainstream" site that said "my social worker says I'm special"!!! I don't know it that one's still around.

Magaly · 29/04/2010 12:57

It's harder than you'd think to design a bag on that zazzle site! I am still working on it....

I bought the bag/mug with "I (heart) someone with Aspergers" because my son was going through a really bad patch (he was 13) and it was to give him a positive message. I also bought mugs for my adult children for the same reason. I suppose it does seem a bit cheesy but at the time it seemed important.
